Ok, I've spoken to Aled about the archive, and he says that we need to get back to him by Friday to let him know what shows we need from him for filling gaps in the archive.

I've looked back over my conversation with him, and this is the situation:

Pre August 2008 - They're all on CD up until August 2008

Post August 2008 - Stored as a Radio 1 ROT folder, you can go to a date like '090908' and Radio 1 is split up into 30 minute sections. With each 30 minute section being 310Mb. So I could go to a list of days that you were missing and copy over 7 half hours but that would be 2.1Gb for show

So basically it looks like anything pre August 2008 is going to be easier to obtain than anything post August 2008. Which is good, because I'm pretty sure it's pre August 2008 shows that we need (I know we have 2010 onwards, and I'm hopeful that Jamie has all of 2009). Having said that, I also suspect that Aled can't be totally sure that all the CD's will be there, so it's just a case of hoping that whatever we ask for is there. Post August 2008 sounds a lot more tricky, so hopefully we can be asking mainly for older shows.

It looks like we will need someone to pick up CD's for ripping and giving back to Aled, and quite possibly also to drop in a USB hard drive. Neil, I remember you saying something about how you might be prepared to do that? If not then I'm sure there's someone who could.

I have a "Missing Moyles List", which so far is just this:

Wednesday 12th November 2008: Alisha Dixon (Incomplete)
Thursday 13th November 2008: Jimmy Carr (Incomplete)
Tuesday 25th November 2008 (Incomplete)
Tuesday 2nd December 2008: Justin Lee Collins (Incomplete)
Wednesday 3rd December 2008 (Incomplete)
Thursday 4th December 2008: Jeremy Clarkson (Incomplete)
Tuesday 9th December 2008 (Incomplete)

It's only based on the incomplete shows that Slaphead was talking about. Does anyone know of any other shows that we don't have?

Of course, if it turned out that there aren't many missing shows at all (which could well be the case), then maybe we could push our luck and ask for as many shows as we can get, just because they will be better quality (especially compared to our shows from the earlier years). There must be a hell of a lot of CD's though.

Whatever happens, I'd like to get back to Aled by Sunday at the very latest, so we can give him (and our London volunteer) all the time we possibly can.

I'm not sure how it would work logistically, but I might be able to pick up CDs, rip and return them. If it's (say) 100 CDs, that'd be easy. I even have some very solid steel cases to protect CDs in transit.

If it's 1,000 CDs, we may have some logistical issues... :D

In theory, I'd love to see every show from 2004 to 2012 in perfect CD quality and will certainly do all I can to make that happen. I haven't listened to many of the early shows from the archive, but I think 2004 sounds rough, so if we are to push our luck, I'd certainly pose the question to Aled of how many of those early year CDs can we borrow? 2004? 2004-2006?

2004-2008?!

What are we looking at -- 600 CDs per year?!

There's no harm in asking!

Well, I know we can't get the whole archive. His specific words were "That is such a huge undertaking we couldn't come close to achieving that", and I think the main reason is because of the ROT folder situation, which sounds like it could be a right pain to work with. So I think all we can do really is ask for the incomplete shows (which happen to be ROT ones), and then ask for as many CD's as he can possibly manage, with the priority being the early years, in year order i.e. 2004 most important and 2008 being least important, because the quality gradually got better.

When it comes to picking up CD's and maybe dropping off a hard drive (do you have a spare one Neil?), I'm just hoping that we only have to pick up the CD's before Friday, and not pick them up, rip them, and get them back by Friday! But I'm sure it's the former. I'll ask him that. But if we can get a lot of CD's, then maybe we could ask for a second volunteer (or volunteers) if you want Neil? Unless you would be happy doing it all yourself (assuming there's no time limit for ripping)?

Regarding the afternoon shows, Aled said:

"Oh wow - you're really asking now. This is such a big job - send me over a list of shows (doesn't have to be complete at all) just so that a) I can start on the job and b) I can work out how big a task it is."

The problem with the afternoon show is that the shows we have seem to all be a bit random. I've attached a document of what we seem to have. Maybe 50 or so? But because it's all so random, where do we start? What would we ask for? And I'm concerned that if we asked for any afternoon shows, then that might reduce the amount of breakfast shows we might get. Unless Aled could get a load of breakfast shows on one day, and afternoon shows on another day. In which case what would we ask for? The first year or something? Or maybe the last year, so it would lead into the breakfast show? Or maybe the first and last years, with the last year being the priority out of the two?

My personal feeling would be to ask for the later afternoon shows first, cos they more closely resemble what the breakfast show grew into. But that's just my opinion :)

I would like to get more of the afternoon shows because I don't really mind the quality of the older archived shows from 2004 etc but I know some of you would like great quality ones. Want to see how different the afternoon show was compared to the breakfast show in the later years for example! I appreciate Aled doing this for us nonetheless.

Yes I agree that the final year of afternoon shows should be the top priority. But it's the same situation - there's just no way we could get all of the afternoon shows.

And I am also of the opinion that the quality of the early breakfast shows doesn't matter too much. Normally I would be bothered, but it is only talking rather than music, and non of them are terrible. But to be fair, it really doesn't seem like we are missing that many breakfast shows after all. I'm hoping Jamie might be around to offer his opinion on what the missing shows are.

I suppose we could just ask for those ten or so 2008 incomplete breakfast shows, and ask for as many breakfast shows as possible beginning with 2004 and working forwards, and also ask for as many afternoon shows as possible, working backwards from the end. But I would rather be as sure as we can be that we don't have any other missing breakfast shows before I message him, because this is going to be our last chance.

If we had more time available to us, then we could do more, but seeing as Aled has limited time and resources, then I'd say get as many unique shows as possible, and seeing as we have all of the breakfast shows - this means getting afternoon/Saturday/Early Bits. Whilst it's a bit of a bummer having the odd link or so missing from a few breakfast shows, the simple fact is that no-one in their right mind is ever going to have time to listen to every minute of every show. If we are going to get more from Aled, then I'd suggest upgrading some of Mike's stuff, which is mostly in mono, but again I'd like to emphasise that I think getting unique shows is far more preferable than upgrading.

Ian, I've said loads of times that I think we have all breakfast shows, and no-one has stepped forward to tell me I'm wrong. Slaphead will be getting 2009 to edit next week, up until mid-August where I think we're already covered. I've also outlined earlier in the thread how much editing you and Ben had to do, and I know you'be both done work on those since.

Ok. So it looks like these are the options:

Afternoon shows (working backwards from the end?)
Saturday shows
Early bits
Mike's breakfast shows (what years are these?)
The seven incomplete breakfast shows that we know of

So how shall we do this? Should we form a thread and have a poll on how to prioritize the list? Or shall we just prioritize them here on this thread? And then I will simply send the list to Aled and say "whatever you can get"? I'm guessing the afternoon shows, Saturday shows, and early bits will all be on CD (if they have Saturday shows and early bits at all) seeing as the early breakfast shows were. How about something like:

Afternoon shows (working backwards from the end?)
Mike's breakfast shows (what years are these?)
Saturday shows
Early bits
The seven incomplete breakfast shows that we know of

Of course, the only problem with simply sending Aled a list like that is that we could just end up getting some afternoon shows. So maybe we need to be more specific. Something like:

Afternoon shows (working backwards from the end. The final year)
Mike's breakfast shows (what years are these? 2004?)
Saturday shows (no idea, will all be a bit random)
Early bits (no idea, will all be a bit random)
The seven incomplete breakfast shows that we know of

Any opinions welcome.

Well I'll leave it until the end of today in case people want to offer then opinions, and then I'll send Aled a message tonight. And then we can just get whatever we get. After all, anything will be better than nothing. And thanks Ben, I can't remember where you're based, but maybe we could consider you another London volunteer, if Neil feels he would need any help with it.

On a completely different note...is anyone going to give Grimmy a try, just in case it actually turned out to be really good? I know they are talking about it in the "last show" thread, so I don't want to start a discussion about it here. But I'm considering trying the first few shows just for the hell of it. And because I really can't stand the Radio 1 playlist, I'm considering editing the first few shows (maybe the first week for now). So I don't know if anyone else would be interested in having those or not...
#477684
I will probably give him a shot but more music will be played, which is a downer considering the fact I didn't really mind the playlist much this time 3 years ago but not too fussed on it nowadays! Sure there will be a few here that would appreciate the edited shows.

Your already missing editing current morning shows. :-) . I'll give him a listen.

2004 & January to April 2005 are Mikes shows.

Your suggestion of the list order looks good to me.
