Greg would have been a better choice but he's only just been given drive time. Unfortunately for Nick the ratings will be awful probably which will be his ultimate downfall.

The real winner from Chris leaving is Chris Evans on Radio 2.

Not necessarily, but no one at Radio 1 would do it for me. The most recent person to leave Radio 1 I would make an effort to listen to would be Colin Murray.

I totally disagree. On one hand, Greg is a very good broadcaster and knows how to talk the talk. That's fine. But his personality doesn't get pushed outside the box and listening for more than 30 minutes is boring. Maybe we need to see a few years go by before Greg breaks outside of his idle personality.

Grimshaw on the other hand is already polished on both accounts having done the late slot for quite a while now. Most of his younger audience will switch to mornings and fulfill the BBCs requirements to get the profile of the station much younger. For me personally, I'm desperate to like Grimshaw at that time of morning as I really don't have anywhere else to go. With Chris, there was this mini-addicition to listen into the next day. Greg doesn't have it, Scott does in small doses (due to the features), but Grimmy... I'm not sure.

Oh, hello all again. Long time user, rare poster here.

I think Grimshaw is being used as a gap inbetween Moyles and James! Give James 2/3years on the drivetime slot and he will be on breakfast. James is the best now at R1 since Moyles leaving! I dont mind listening to him at all

I haven't listened to Nick yet. I'll give him a chance, and won't make any presumptions. I think if there was anybody at radio 1 who could suitably replace Moyles though, we'd know about it.

I also notice they've done that thing though, where they put 'The Radio 1 Breakfast Show With Nick Grimshaw', so when it doesn't work out they can put someone else's name in there.

The main theme of this whole leaving idea was that Radio 1 needs to attract more listeners aged 15-29. I reject the notion that a presenter has to be in the target demographic in order to appeal to the target demographic. I just don't see it. I'm 20. I love(d!) The Chris Moyles Show. I am determined to give Grimshaw a try but it will be tough, like the previous poster said, to accept someone else doing the breakfast show.

I don't really see why I should give Grimshaw 'a listen' - I like Chris, I am not devoted to 'The Breakfast Show'... Make no bones about it, Nick Grimshaw was on T4... Plucked by Radio 1... Then stuck on the Breakfast Show - Whatever he (or anyone else) says, I will never believe it was 'his dream job', and that he has 'loved radio' since he was 1... Come on, this is just the end of an era and they have no idea what to do... Hence they stick in a patsy and hope things pan out. BBC Radio 1 can * right off, it's done this across the board - we need a new radio station, I've seen people from the age of 15-40 on here in tears... Something is wrong!

OK, I admit I went out and drowned my sorrows and I'm rambling... Oh no, I said ramble!

Say it aint so!!! Is ti just a bad dream!?

I see what you are saying, but my comment was aimed at the younger listeners, the target audience, those that actually like the noise that masquerades as music on Radio 1 these days.

A lot of people are writing off Nick before he's even said a word on air, you never know, he might turn out to be entertaining to younger people. Not me, though, but that's what Radio 1 want. He has the sort of voice that would send me to sleep, not wake me up in the morning.

The thing with Grimshaw is if I don't give him a try then I'm guilty of what a lot of people did with Moyles, forming an opinion without giving him a fair go. I don't expect to enjoy Nick's show due to the different direction it's going in but who knows? I didn't think I'd enjoy Chris Moyles and in fact didn't until about 3 days in.

I can't help but feel that Grimmy's being set up for a fall here, maybe I'm just being overly cynical but...

The show will be "The Radio 1 breakfast show with..." - I seem to recall from reading his book that Chris had concerns when he did "Live with Chris Moyles" that the host could be changed (and of course it was when he was dropped and Christian O'connell took over)

The music policy, if it is as strict as is being suggested, won't give Grimmy as much opportunity to put his stamp on things, it'll just be a music show with some talking in between, no doubt with lots of promotion of other shows too.

The loss of the "zoo" format - it worked for Simon Mayo, Steve Wright, Chris Evans and countless commercial stations. His will be a lone voice by all accounts, risky move. People want entertainment at that time of the day, not just music, regardless of the age group of the listeners.

I still think Greg is the man they really want (I hope I'm wrong 'cos I can't be doing with him at breakfast!) they wouldn't put their new rising star on straight after Chris, if Grimmy flops then anyone who comes in afterwards will have a much easier ride - much easier to follow a bad act than a good one.

There's something about the promo trailers that to me they just sound a bit flat. All this Team Grimmy stuff, it just feels a tad half-arsed.

Or it could just be that I'm no longer downwiddit.

I still reckon that some time next year there will be a little switch between breakfast & drive, let's face it, it wouldn't be the first time that's happened...

I've just had a thought (God damn it. My brain is swelling). We all got a little tired of the constant "Tweet us, Txt us, e-mail us" etc. Ryhs has said that the new show will go batshite crazy (Not a direct quote, just paraphrasing) with the social side of things. That means everytime a song ends Nick will have just enough time to say "Tweet us, Txt us, e-mail us, Facebook us" but then get shot down by the boss for running over time with the link.
10 songs an hour, No actual link, No chance of projecting a personality, No chance of getting and keeping more listeners.
Grimmy is in for a crap time. Not from us or the reveiwers, but from the bosses wanting to turn a morning show (Which people want to wake up to) into a dull as dishwater/same as the rest show which would only make you drowsy not smile. Everybody needs to smile in the morning.

Radio 4 Feedback programme tonight were just talking about the end of the CMS and the new Grimmy show. In the first 10 mins of the programme if you want to listen again. 20.00hrs.

Rhys was saying that Grimmy's show is going to be more about listener participation and use of social media.
#478087
They really are pushing for social media. They've got Laura from Interactive joining the team, who I think was involved with the Amazing Phil and Danisnotonfire shows over christmas, so she really knows her stuff social media wise. The kids are into all that innit.

Ha, and here's me listening to Radio 4 already (been my weekend secret for 10+ years), well you've got to keep up with The Archers dontcha know

Maybe we should all participate, and when they ask our name, tell them our age too.

When he plays a new fangled tune, tell him it's not as good as the original back in the '70's.

There could be some fun to be had. 8)

Chris has been a huge champion of Facebook and Twitter (in particular) and used it well (I did love them promoting their individual twitter accounts on the final show video). Chris has 2 and a half million twitter followers, and they definitely pushed it constantly.

The thing that shocks me the most is don't the BBC realise that if it was about the music, then people would listen to their iPod (other brands available) - I would imagine most 'youth' exposure to the radio is because their parents have it on in the mornings, or it's the station in the car on the way to school (that's how I got in to the Chris Moyles show).

I'm not writing him off, I'll listen to it, but given that I don't listen when Scott Mills is on (prefer to just listen to music), I can't see me being a regular listener.

The new Radio 1 Breakfast show minisite has been, ahem, launched.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01mrh21

Is it just me or does that seem unbelievably half arsed? What the hell are Radio 1 thinking of designing a site like that? Sets the website back more then 10 years (The 2002 Chris Moyles flash site was much better then this).

Has anyone noticed how they are pushing 'brand Radio 1'. Maybe so its easier to pop Greg's name onto the end of it.

I think Chris is the only one who's had 'The [name] Show' - all other breakfast shows have been called 'The Radio 1 Breakfast Show with [name]' haven't they?

Kind of. I guess there wasn't the social media prior to Chris Moyles (no Facebook/Twitter/Myspace etc), so all it was the presenters name and then they highlighted the fact it was the breakfast show through the jingles etc. Looking at all the other shows (especially drive-time), they're plastered with the named presenter rather than being the "mid-morning show", "early-afternoon show", "the drive-time show" etc.

From looking at the new Radio 1 breakfast show page, it seems like R1 are now wanting control back of the branding after everything was plastered with Chris' name on it. Smells more like a temporary position or experiment for Grimmy to be head presenter on the station as they can quite easily transplant the presenter and not have to change any branding. The emphasis will be on the show itself rather than presenter. Is that right? Maybe to capture the younger audience but it's sad the show won't be based around Grimmy at all. Seems like the only thing branded with Grimmy's name on it is the social media compaigns, a la #TeamGrimmy.

Must agree though, seems very lazy.
