The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

Hi all,

I know I've read these words myself so many times over the past few days, but without being boring I'm a "long-time lurker, first-time poster" which is odd, as I've literally read this forum every day for the past 2 months, and every week or so for about 8 years before then, so I'm not sure why I'm only getting round to posting now!?

Anyway, trying to come to terms with the void that this breakfast show is going to leave, I've just purchased a copy of Dave's book from ebay, and have read both of Chris' books previously. I know Aled mentioned in his Twitter Q & A this morning that there were plans for possibly some of the team to write a book/books, but I think there would be a great call for a book detailing the history of TCMS, from a listeners point of view?

I know myself, even though the show has been a massive part of my daily routine for the past 8.5 years, and even though I've listened to every single podcast for the past 3 years, and many of the previous ones too, but listening this weekend to the special best of 2004, 2005.... and so on podcasts, there were so many moments that made me go "Oh yeah, I forgot that happened.." So I read TCMS Wiki page, to refresh my memory on other things I may have forgotten, but there's not a huge amount of detail on there. But I know from reading so many posts, that so many forum members have real encyclopedic memories, and I think it would just be such a shame if those memories weren't put to a better use than (no disrespect) posting on the forum!

So, how possible would it be, to put together a guide/history/almanac type book, that just talked about, remenisced, reminded and informed people about all of the ups, downs, hilarity, notoriety, fame and generall all-round good times, that the show has bought to so many people over the 8.5 years? I fully appreciate I'm talking about a major project here, and saw how much effort and trouble Nicola went to putting together the chrismoyles.net book for Chris, which itself was simply amazing, but I just thought it was worth putting it out there and seeing what other opinions were, as purely from a selfish point of view, it's something I would love to read, and read, and read!!!

Me too, but it depends whether it's a personal account, or an overview. I would suspect members would write a personal history, which will be great anyway, but I'm just wishing there was an overall show book as well!

Something like a CMS Wiki would be nice. I for example only vaguely knew who Longman is so it would be nice if one could search for "Longman" or what the "Salty Balls" are about.

I also sometimes remember something very funny I would like to relisten - at the moment it's the Enya-Whale-Song bit - but for the life of me I can't remember when and where it is on my podcasts. So an index or something like that where every poster can post the information would be very nice. But it's a lot of work and a lot of information is here in the forum or in the sounds department anyway.

It's a ridiculous amount of work. I personally think a physical book could only be embarked upon by someone who had a publishing deal and an advance, cos it's too much to undertake while working a real job at the same time. The tribute book was a lot of work and it was essentially a home-made scrapbook - that was what I wanted, but an actual published book is a completely different proposition, and an extremely time-consuming and costly one at that.

I think a wiki is more achievable but probably only when things like show editing and tedious linking are all finished - which is still a long time away. By that time people will have moved on and possibly lost interest.

Yeah, I think it's a cool idea. Just in case I needed to take on another project :) I bet some of the boys who do sound edits would be willing to pitch in too. I think we all have that same form of OCD that makes stuff like that attractive.

How serious do you want it to be? Take it a year at a time and split the months between people that want to contribute and they listen to the shows or podcasts and write about guests/games/features/funny moments etc or just people write about things they remember?

I guess a lot of info is in the show reviews that people used to do regularly.

What I would love to do would document every single show along with photos (when possible) and give a brief rundown of what was said in the first half hour, songs played and important moments from that particular show. Im aware of how much time this would take but imagine the size of the book! It would be truly epic.

Depending on the structure of this I would be interested in contributing. I plan to continue listening to the archive and could make notes of times, dates first guest appearences etc and add them to this thing if that is the sort of stuff we are looking at doing.

Sound slike a mammoth task though. The archive on here is a big achievement, but that is mainly due to workload. This would be far more complex as I understand it.

A Wiki is a much better idea anyway, I hadn't even thought of that when I suggested a book in the first place!! With a Wiki you have the benefit of being able to constantly update it, correct inaccuracies and of course have no publishing costs as Nicola quite rightly points out!! Great idea!!

And of course I'd be happy to contribute seeing as I was the one requesting something in the first place!!!!

Has anyone done something like setting up a Wiki?

I'd guess we need a small team who is responsible and who comes up with how and what we want to do. They'd discuss for example if all features should be on there or all the guests (including dates? Funny quotes?) or Team members? Or should there be an index where one can search for if remembering a funny episode? Should there be an entire Wiki page for each show?
And then come back here, present it and take ideas on board and as a next step distribute the tasks to people who have been so kind to offer.

That's just a first idea that came into my head. I don't think it would lead to much if Chris just sets up a Wiki and anyone who knows anything would just start without any directions.

Plus, any good & catchy names for a CMS Wiki?

Yeah, I'll also contribute some content to the Wiki. If we could automatically set up a template for each indiviual show and pre-select guest names, topics of conversation, team members present etc. that would be a big help.
