I'm a music fan so any station is good for me but, It's the D.J. that keeps me listening to a certain station and radio 1 has been my only station on the dial worth listening to. A wide varity of musical genres (To a point anyway before anybody pipes up with "They don't play Opera" etc). Until I am bored of the music and the D.J. I'm sticking with it. I'll give Nick a bash but Chris will always be my D.J. of choice.

I'm the same but slightly younger at 25. Adverts annoy me immensely, so most of commercial radio is out the door straight away - greedy buggers. However, I'm surprised no one has mentioned Chris' commercial radio friend, Hirsty who does mornings on Capital Yorkshire (old Galaxy station before the buggers plastered the awful Capital brand over it). Always used to listen to him whilst Chris was off but not caught the show recently. Very decent in style to Chris with a zoo format (always likes to pull characters into the show) and very willing to take risks.

One of the features is called Anonymous Confessions. By the sound of that, you know it's risque already and I love that feature!

I dont get how he got the job anyway?
dont get me wrong, everyone deserves a chance and opportunity but he was on the late shift, that personally i dont know anyone who listened to him??
mills filled in loads of times for moyles and does an excellent job, he got a similar "crack" to moyles with alot of chat and messing about, so why does he get the job?
Maybe his free bus pass is too near for the "new boss?"

Scott's as old as Chris. The BBC's brief is to get rid of the older listeners - how would replacing one DJ with another of the same age achieve that? That's why he didn't get the job. Grimmy is younger and has a 'cool' young following. The people complaining about his style are, for the most part, exactly the ones the BBC are looking to lose.

well, if thats the case, refund my tv licence as according to your view "they dont want me listening" and i wont use the bbc service?
But it isnt that simple, so its the whole point of the way the the bbc is run, its the public who pay for it should get the choice, not 1 boss.

So the BBC are guilty of ageism. So what? Unless you are prepared to get rid of your tv altogether, you're stuck paying the licence fee regardless of what you think about the radio 1 breakfast show. I think most of us here came to terms with the direction Radio 1 is going in a couple of months ago.

Interestingly, you don't need a TV license to listen to radio. You also only need a TV license if you watch live TV. If you only watch stuff on the BBC iPlayer, you don't need a license.

Which is why I recently cancelled my TV licensing direct debit.

The BBC just want to lower the average age. It's not really ageism as such because in their view there are stations that cater to all age groups and tastes. If they said that if you're over 30 you cannot listen then that's a different issue but that's not the case.

I don't like the view that the BBC has but getting all angry about it won't change what's happened.

Exactly. I'm still massively upset about the show ending, but posting, or reading, great chunks of age legislation isn't gonna make me feel any better.

Chris was the only think I tuned into on r1 (after Emma b left the surgery & giles peterson left). Im nearly 30 and parts on r2 aren't bad if you're more open to your music. I'd much prefer 'pop' from 80's and before than the crap today. When moyles is away I've tuned into Evans. Drive time i tune into mayo. Jamie Callum for jazz after (can't remember the days). 6music have mark and lard & 5live for Bacon. There's lots of good radio but I don't get a chance really unless I'm up for work or driving home.

I wonder what Radio 1's next step would be if, the number of listeners overall goes down - but the average listener age stays the same (at 32?).

I, personally, think its wrong for a radio station to appeal to '15-29' year olds. Surely, its about the type of music? If a 40 year old still likes the current pop chart they are more likely to listen to a pop-radio-station than a 20 year old, who would be more likely to have an iPod with their favourite songs.

I think everyone on here is upset moyles left the show (or pushed), and that applies to the rest of the team who have gone there separate ways.
I am just trying to get my point over that regardless of age (I'm 32) it doesnt matter cause radio1 still had a good audience the way it was.
Dont change something if it isn't broke.
I enjoyed the chat and the odd song which was relevant to most age ranges.
I listened to the show with a younger person (24) and he never complained about the talking or the music. He enjoyed it for what it was all about, good crack, relevant and down to the point truth which other people wouldn't dare talk about.
As the last post read, i think i will just be putting stuff on my ipod now or just not listen to anything.
Lets just hope the saviour returns one day!

As a side note:
Liz Bolas from Wolverhampton wrote in to the Radio times magazine this week to say that she is going nowhere after listening round the wireless when Chris was on holiday to see what she could start listening to when he finishes only to find crap everywhere. The reply was to try Radio 6. I don't have digital radio (F.M. baby) so that is right out the window unless I turn the telly on to listen to the radio.

App for the phone or online seem to be the only alternative choices i can think of.

I got myself a pocket DAB in Asda two years ago for £35. It works a treat here in Bangor NI where the reception for TV & radio , never mind DAB, is notoriously crap. But fair play I've had very little trouble picking up a signal of the pathetically limited MUX we get over here in Ulster, though it goes a bit ropey at times.
I can recommend Shaun Keaveney on 6Music in the mornings. Not as good as the CMS because theres more music, but then again the music is infinitely better than Radio 1.....not that thats saying much. But i've had quite a few belly laughs listening to Keaveney's deadpan whinging when Chris has been on holiday.

Whenever it's my turn to do the tea round at work I always put 6Music on at work, Shaun Keaveney isn't Moyles but he'll be a good replacement for me.

6Music is a decent station just a shame it's not also available on FM (although I believe there were plans at one point) as Radcliffe & Maconie, Steve Lamacq, Jon Holmes, Craig Charles and 6Mix are all great shows on there.

To be fair it's not Ben Cooper's fault - he's been given his orders to reduce the age group by the BBC trust (I guess)

If Ben hadn't got the gig then whoever came in after Andy Parfitt would have likely done the same thing.

It's annoying that there is nowhere really for us 30-40 somethings to go apart from commercial radio, which will be sponsored by some inane crap and have adverts every 5 bloomin' minutes.

We need Radio 1 1/2.

It's a shame Capital isn't the station it used to be, before Moyles did Afternoons I used to tune in with Tarrant, then continue through with Steve Penk, Martin Collins, Kid Jensen, Dr Fox and Paul Phear on weekdays, with Neil Long, Margareta Taylor and of course Moyles on the weekend.

Capital had a great variety of DJs, chat and Music and appealed to everyone yet now it's just a whored out name with no meaning, then again the radio group is been run by one Charles Allen, the same bloke who was part of the reason ITV are in the state they are now.

Anyway I'll try Grimey but I think I'll have to invest in a radio alarm clock with a DAB radio in the near future

I listened to about an hour of Shaun's Friday show. A couple of things jumped out at me. First of all, there's more music than Chris's show (no surprise there of course), but less than other Radio 1 programs that I've tried to listen to. Seems like he plays a song, talks about stuff - mostly a monologue but with a little back and forth between others in the studio but nowhere near as much as between Chris and the team - and then plays another song. Like Chris, he plays some background music while he's talking. However, and this came to really annoy me, he constantly faded the music volume up and down whenever he wasn't saying anything. I couldn't help but think about the audio clip from that woman DJ from Malta during a Toby Larone segment. He was doing the same thing! He does some impressions like Chris. It was jarring to hear him do a Terry Wogan impression. But honestly, I didn't find him funny. I'll admit, part of my problem probably stems from me being over in the U.S. and so I wasn't getting the cultural references. It took me awhile to acclimate to Chris's show for the same reason, but despite that I still found Chris (and the rest of the team) to be very funny.

During that 1st hour, Shaun mentioned that Friday was Chris's last show. Their comments were neutral toward him. He did bring up that Chris was telling his listeners to check out Shaun's show and he seemed to be appreciative. He also mentioned that he and Chris met for the first time Thursday and basically repeated the bits that Chris mentioned on Friday's show.

OK, thanks for that. I did try downloading a show just then, and had a flick through it. You're right about turning the music up and down, that's annoying! To be fair, I didn't listen to enough to see if I enjoy the humour or not, but it's quite downbeat compared to Moyles. For now I think I will listen to any Sara Cox shows I can find, and also podcasts.

Very eclectic and clearly more suited toward my age group (I'm an old fart at 50). There were a couple of Shaun's links that made me smile. And then right around the 1:45 mark he mentioned Chris again and how they met for the first time on Thursday. He then did something that made me laugh out loud. I won't say what, but it's something that Chris could very easily have done on his show.

I could have written pretty much this exact same post after listening back to Shaun's Friday show today, during my traditional Sunday baking afternoon. It was nothing like Moyles' show, but it was definitely a good listen, and the music was ten times better. It was nice to hear him mention meeting Chris for the first time too, and playing the clip of Chris suggesting his listeners give Shaun a go. I'll certainly be listening to him again.
