Right. Time for a random and out of date question but:
Will the marathon show ever be put up as an .mp4 format? Plus will it ever be the full version all in one lump or is that asking too much?

No longer - I edited all those into one file and reuploaded it (I must have been bored one day). It isn't the complete show though - I seem to recall I chopped out a bit of a long and really quite dull chat with that bloke who presented Celebdaq (remember that?)

You got rid of the Celebdaq bit, argh, please tell me the individual parts are still available?!?!?!

:-P

That would be a huge file!

Although made me think I could create a version of all my edited audio ones glued together.

Erm, I'm not sure...I'll have to check at home...

Aled's got back to me. This is what he said:

"What I'm doing is double checking with BBC Archives as to what shows they have of ours and I'm giving them the shows they don't have. Of the ones they DO have - if I have that show on CD I'm putting them into a box."

And he's offered to send me the box. I know that we originally intended for someone to go to London and pick them up (namely Neil, and possibly Ben), but it seems that Aled is prepared to send them out. But of course, whoever receives them has to rip them all! And they also have to distribute them to Ben, Slaphead, and me for editing and uploading. So maybe it would make more sense if they came to me (or one of the editors). And for all I know it may be that Aled might prefer to send them to me rather than someone else, seeing as we've been in discussion about them. But I don't know.

The only thing I'm not clear on is what era the shows are from. So we could either ask him that, or just accept that whatever we get is whatever we get. Whatever happens, chances are we'll get some new shows, and CD-quality replacements of existing shows too :)

Opinions?

CD-quality, excellent. Some of the older shows are a little bit lower quality (through no fault of anyone's, back then there wasn't the iPlayer to provide us with a radio-quality download!)

I know myself personally would love to have a FLAC copy of the shows but I'd imagine you'd be looking to rip them to something like a 192kbps MP3?
#478944
Normally I would rip to WAV, and then edit and save to mp3 (usually 128kbps as with the rest of the archive). I haven't worked with FLAC yet, not sure if Sound Forge supports it or not. I know Neil intended to rip to FLAC though.

Edit:

Sound Forge doesn't support FLAC. So if I received them, I would rip them to WAV, and then no doubt post data DVD's of some of the WAV's to Ben and Slaphead for editing.

And if Neil received them, then I'm guessing he would rip them to FLAC, and distribute them to us three editors, and in my case I would have to convert them to WAV, then edit and save to MP3.

Either way, I'm guessing it might be possible to distribute some FLAC/WAV DVD's to you, depending on how many discs it ended up being.

That's great news from Aled. It'd be even nicer if he could dupe the CDs he gave to the Beeb, but that might be a big ask depending on how many there are.

Ian, I'm happy to either help you or I could handle the entire box.

I have:

* Lots of free time
* A large RAID server to store files securely both before and after uploading to archive.org
* Experience with Exact Audio Copy ripping
* Experience with rescuing data from damaged or corrupt discs (CD-Rs do eventually decay)
* Numerous CD and DVD drives -- some older discs will only be recognised by certain drives
* Spare PC hardware to set up a VortexBox to speed up ripping and encoding

I'd definitely recommend encoding to both MP3 and FLAC. For archival purposes, you won't get better than FLAC and it will future-proof the collection.

Exciting times!

The Marathon Show will be going up on archive.org eventually, give it time. And archive.org will recode it to MP4.
Or, you can get a free usenet trial and get the DVB-S files for the Marathon show from Usenet and recode them to MP4 with Handbrake. I did that to watch them on my phone.

I am planning on sharing all the video we have, but it will take a while. I only have a 150kbps upload and when uploading, it kills my internet connection so I can't do it 24/7.
I've shared about 30 to 40 hours so far, so watch those first! :D

I'm gonna post it publicly for the first time, we'll see how much bandwidth I eat up. I'm hosting all the Marathon show DVB-S files here:

Edit: I've got 10TB of free usage then my connectivity is limited to 10MBit/sec. Interesting!

If you were to pass on some or all of the original CDs (or copies) to me for ripping, I'd suggest the following workflow:

1) I'd rip the show to hard drive as a WAV. Each show will be on multiple CDs, so I'd join the shows together with audacity (losslessly).

2) Encode the entire, unedited show to FLAC (lossless).

3) I'd then upload the show to a secure, encrypted location for the editors.
By my calculations, that would take, per show:
(((3.5 hours) * 1 411.2 (kbit / s)) / 2) / (145 (kilobytes per second)) = 2.1 hours

In theory, I could upload 10 shows per day, if the editors can edit that fast!

4) The editor(s) would then download the show. At a speed of 8mbit/sec, this would take around 18 minutes.

5) The editors would unpack the FLAC to WAV (it's pretty fast to do that) and edit the show.

6) The editors would then upload the MP3 (and FLAC if possible) to archive.org

Job done! (?)

ianpwilliams wrote:Sounds good to me! I'll see if Aled is happy to send the box to you then Neil. Or I could suggest that you go and pick it up if that was easier for you, and if he was happy to do that? What's easier for you?

Good stuff. I would suggest using a reliable courier (signed for) to Chez Neil, or at the very least Recorded Delivery or whatever the post office use that means they won't lose it.
I think we'd all be devastated to lose any of the CDs.

If it's easier for Aled, I'd be willing to go in to town to collect, but assuming the CDs are all nicely cosied up with bubble wrap in case the courier uses the box as a football, it's a lot easier to ship them, especially if it's a meganormous* collection.

Quick word of caution about Record Delivery: it's not guaranteed - I made that mistake once before. Special Delivery is guaranteed and is also next day; Recorded Delivery just requires a signature once it's got there - doesn't actually guarantee getting there.

ianpwilliams wrote:Yeah I remember the post office saying that. I sent a parcel recently, and it was a lot cheaper using a courier other than Royal Mail. But yeah, seems it would have to be Special and not Recorded.

I've sold a few things on eBay recently and for very heavy items (as a big box[es] of CDs would be), using a courier was a lot cheaper.

I'm sure the Beeb already know of, and use a reliable courier service. I don't see Aled (or to a lesser extent, Matt Fincham) staggering down to the local Post Office with huge boxes... :D

I'm sure if I want to push things really, he's already going out of his way to help us.

Yes, Aled is already being extremely generous. If he does another #AskAled, I will ask him; "Aled, why are you so awesome?"
