It's like they know he won't be as good as Moyles, so they try to get him extra support with this desperate-looking and lame(not to mention polarizing) publicity campaign.

This is exactly right. I can't remember what happened when Moyles started, but I'm pretty sure they didn't have to invent a campaign which had absolutely no relation to the show or to him, but with the sole intent to try and make people care. It's desperate to drag in all of his celebrity friends too. It's like name-dropping, only the celebrities are happy to be a part of it.

The TV ads were pretty weak.

To be fair, It would be odd if they didn't leverage his celebrity friends, or do a social media marketing campaign. That's not really what I have a problem with - it's the biggest show on the network, and they need to promote it in a modern way (which appeals to the target audience).

I just thought the idea of twisting the knife and banging on about the previous lack of music was a bit much.
