No offence to grimshaw. But I so want this breakfast show to fail. So bad that Ben cooper crawls back to chris. And begs to have him back.

Interestingly, and I think it is more wishful thinking than anything else, but if you listen to Chris' goodbye song, he mentions the line "we might be back one day"; if that can be the 25th September 2012 I will know there is a god....

For years, my two favourite features on Radio 1 were The Wonder Years and The Golden Hour.... to lose The Wonder Years earlier in the year was bad enough...

Back on topic, am I the only one who finds it a wee bit strange that they've put in this "now with added music" on the adverts for Grimmy's show?

They are more digs at Grimmy and a lot of people seem to think that he chooses all the music... I feel quite bad for him actually. 90% of the positive posts were from One Direction fans from when he played their new single. A lot of them seem to be from people who aren't in their target zone which the big bosses want I suppose. Hopefully it will die down soon, people don't like change!

As great as that would be it's extremely unlikely he'll do the Radio 1 breakfast show again. The goodbye song also featured the line "even though we want to stay". I think that might have been a reference to the fact Chris wanted to do ten years on breakfast.

I've started a separate topic specifically to discuss Grimmy's first show(s) (as opposed to the general subject of his appointment etc).

There's still something about Grimmy's appointment and the whole way they've gone about this that just doesn't seem right.

From memory when there's a major change of show it's normally timed with a re-brand, ie a change of news bed & station id's etc. Nothing changed.

The format - seems to be anti everything that went on before, my feeling is that they wouldn't want to replace a zoo format with another zoo format but I reckon give it time and that's exactly what will happen.

The whole Team Grimmy thing I actually found insulting to Chris but I'm sure it wasn't intended, right Ben?

The desperation to plug Grimmy's show in the last week or so was just overkill and bloody annoying.

I still think Gregg is the man they really want (lord help us) and he'll have a much smoother ride and be more appreciated if Grimmy screws this up than if he was parachuted into the slot straight after Chris.

Reading some of the comments both on here and facebook etc, today's show wasn't generally well received.

I feel for Grimmy, I don't think he's going to get a fair chance here and he's facing all kinds of restrictions that Chris never had.

You have to ask why Chris was never has restricted as Grimmy will be; more than likely they knew that Chris would walk, and they would lose their flagship show in an instant.....

.....which makes it even more baffling why they have done it. Maybe Ben Cooper is sticking his fingers up at the trust so he can say told you so in a few months time, as he leaves with his pay off. If that is the case, I feel sorry for Grimmy that he is being used as the sacrificial lamb in all this....

Do you think it goes as deep as that? I find it hard to believe that the controller of a national radio station would go as far as put a DJ through the worst part of his career just to prove a point.

Nick Grimshaw is exactly what Radio 1 need to attract the audience they want so he's going nowhere anytime soon. You have to remember he isn't broadcasting for us, he's broadcasting for students at breakfast time.

And 18 - 25 year old students like One Direction and Justin Bieber? 8O Bit of a miscalculation whoever made that decision.

If I was to be pedantic, you'd only have 15 - 17 year olds left (as anyone under that don't count in RAJARs). Not being pedantic, fair point but I always have a belief that breakfast shows should have a net as wide as possible around the core target audience. Especially when you consider parent school runs etc. God, I'm sounding repeative and boring and irritated.

You can see I'm having a bad day. Still trying to accept Moyles ain't coming back.

regarding things not changing, no stationwide relaunch etc.

Could it be that the whole rebrand was already done while Chris was still there - but they left him to it to some degree.

Being one, I can tell you students don't really like him either.

Zane Lowe.

To be fair, who else could of gone in at this stage who's got a big enough name at Radio 1?

Scott Mills - too old
Fearne - too pregnant/busy with TV
Greg - still too new/safe/boring
Dev - no way
Huw - too wayward
Reggie - probably a better bet if he wasnt doing so much TV
Sara - too old
Vernon - too old/busy with TV

I personally think Radio 1 is in a big mess with only one presenter from a radio background young enough. Although, I can see why BBC have branded the breakfast show by itself so they can chop and change presenters as they wish without too much effort.

I'm actually a big fan of Greg James. He's from a radio background like Chris was and will treat the breakfast show with the maximum of respect. He'd be the sort to play Flowers In The Rain as his first track. A radio geek. It won't be too long before he gets it.

I don't think that Grimmy hold much weight with anyone over 22, and has a massive 'London cool' factor with the under 16s. Seems they're targeting the under 16s so that in a few years the numbers will swell.

Greg would be a classic breakfast show - I don't think Radio 1 want that.

THEY'RE CANNIBALISING THE TARDIS.

Maybe so, but it's a risky opportunistic signing rather than someone who can do 3 - 5 years and keep some continuity within the programming by plonking their personality on it. It seems that this format for the breakfast slot is an experiment. Whether Ben Cooper is taking the risk because his bosses are piling on the pressure or thinks this is the way it should go, I wouldn't like to guess.

chrysostom wrote:In terms of expense it certainly is.

Given that on the listen again, Chris is trying to give away a fake Gucci bag on air - it's safe to say that the BBC of today is a world away from that of 9 years ago.

However he gets
stopped from doing that the next day by the BBC lawyers
.

What is noticeable is all the expensive trips and C-Words -- "Win a trip to New York with 5 DJs and 23 producers and execs from Radio 1!" What?! How many people are they sending? That doesn't really happen any more. Now, it's "Let's go to Carlisle!"

I am pretty sure it has been mentioned elsewhere but what keeps running through my mind is the name of the show. It's not that hard to swap in a different presenter's name in now that it is the "Radio One Breakfast Show" with ____.
