The Chris and Dave rumours are very reminiscent of other high profile working partnerships that play out in the media. I seem to remember that 3 years ago similar things were said about James Corden and Mat Horne. the relatioship had broken down and they had fallen out etc etc. I would imagine that the same rumours will startif Ant and Dec ever stop working together in the future. I guess that Chris and Dave will have been, and will likely continue to be, extremely fond of each other for all that the other did in helping them with their respective career. They may even work together in the future, who knows.
In a way Dave is exactly right in what he says about needing a clean break though. Any announcement that he was to be working with Chris so soon would only lead to a desire form fans for the return of the Chris Moyles Show in its current form. After 8.5 years on the highest profile show on the network, and having achieved so much, there is likely to be huge amounts of fear and trepidation that Chris and Dave can't recreate that breakfast "magic". Or worse still, it's a flop. This will not only damage Chris and Dave's careers, but will also damage the Chris Moyles show brand and everyones associated goodwill and fond memories of the show. The tricky bit for both Dave and Dom is that they are so synonymous with what Chris did on breakfast, that it will be very difficult for them to work on another show with Chris again without us all quite naturally assuming that it will just be like the breakfast shows were. If Chris continues in radio, it is likely to be drastically different and therefore bringing together old elements of the team will only result in texts/tweets etc demanding returns for old features, jingles, guests. I for one would love an announcement that Chris, Dave and/or Dom will be back soon but with each passing day my hopes fade and it becomes clear that each person needs to take their own path and close the chapter that was the Chris Moyles show.
Add to this that Dave is clearly a talented and funny writer, and has established himself as a broadcaster in his own right with 5live, he needs the space to be able to develop his own career in its own direction. If he quickly goes into another project with Chris then he is forever going to be viewed as a shadow and may never be able to truly stand independent of Chris or the Chris Moyles show. Aled has basically confirmed in his #askaled session today that management pulled the plug as the team only found out the day before the announcement that they were being replaced. I am more inclined to believe that a management decision, not the fall out of 2 longtime friend and colleagues, was responsible for the shows end. This may also give an indication of Dave's so called moody and subdued demeanor on the last few shows. I'm sure all the team will have been approaching the last shows with a mixture of excitement and anxiety/fear over what the future holds. As someone who recently lost their dream job through redundancy, I can relate to that roller coaster of emotion - and I didn't have 7 million people to entertain.
I know this is probably not the right place, but can I also just pass on my thanks and congratulations to all the guys who were involved with, and put together, the forum's tribute book. The team looked genuinely touched by it and it was nice to see Chris flicking through it between songs on Friday. A very well thought out and touching thing to do. Well done guys.
