I think there is going to be a LOT of that. And the NHS will get a load of claims too, and I would be very surprised if a lot of them aren't fraudulent as well as the genuine ones. Its a right old mess.

The claim that the hospitals/corporations were negligent is one thing, but claiming compensation for an event 30-40 years ago with no witnesses & where the perpetrator is dead surely can't make it through a legal process?

Whether or not victims have grounds to claim against the BBC and NHS is currently being reviewed. It will be based on whether the BBC and NHS were responsible for Savile's behaviour, and if it can be shown that complaints were made to and not properly investigated by either organisation, it could easily be found that they were. If the answer is yes, where will it end? The police are currently saying 30 victims, but the reality is probably, over the amount of time he was at it, hundreds if not thousands.

And that's just the genuine ones.

Apparently there's 40 potential victims and 340 potential lines of enquiry so far, and I'd imagine that's bound to grow. Of course there'll be some who aren't genuine, and with the lack of actual evidence telling the difference between them and the actual victims will be difficult.

And if celebs like Savile(who never struck me as being a superstar even if he was a household name) had such power to have things like this covered up, it highlights a pretty disturbing dark side of celebrity culture.

I genuinely don't think it would happen today. Celebrities weren't ten a penny then like they are now - being a celebrity actually meant something, whereas today we view famous people with little or no automatic respect - which I think is healthy, and would mean that society in general would be far happier to rip them to pieces than would have been the case in the seventies at least.

Yeah, I should've added I was referring to that era too.
Also back then because there was no Internet and no interactive media, it was that much easier to keep dodgy things secret, and rumours/allegations were much easier to control.

Just reading about the Roman Polanski incident - feeling towards him seems to be relatively positive, despite his crimes. Compare that to Jimmy Savile, and the situation seems ridiculous.

Mmm he appeard to have abused 1 victim and got caught. nasty bit of work, jimmy S seems more deceitful, which the press are going to great lengths to spell out, it appears they have gone nuts... so much is being made of all of this from all areas of the media that there must be something more. Don't you get the feeling that the tabloids are poised to strike as soon as the police investigation starts to publish some kind of statment about what they have found

1) gangland/clubland and wrestling links (i.e the muscle to shut people up)
2) entertainment/celebrity, the press are hopeing or already know it spreads to more household names
3) the channel Islands link and the big money/power associated with residents over there
4) frankly bizzare relationships with management teams of the instiutions that the alledged incidents took place.

A lot of the claims about Savile will turn out to be bollocks. So many people are jumping on the bandwagon and coming up with all sorts of stories about Savile having the keys to Broadmoor Hospital etc. The real victims of Savile's abuse will end up being overlooked in favour of sensationalised nonsense.
