I've removed the link to the auction.
The fact that a percentage of the funds raised are going to a good cause and that the poster has had a tough time of late are not reasons that I can allow advertising where we have taken the opposite approach every other time. To permit one post just means it's harder to justify deleting others in the future.
As a compromise I've left the post and so if anyone really cares to bid for the item they can hunt it down on eBay, but the next time I'd delete it outright, especially as the originator has no history on the forum.
Nicola did exactly the right thing.
As an aside I receive, or am copied on, all sorts of begging emails to get Chris to appear, donate items or make a gesture to various causes. Its usually hard not to be sympathetic or feel supportive to the causes they mention, but the fact is that if you do it once then you need to do it every time in order to be consistent - and there are way, way, way too many to do something for them all.
