So my girlfriend and flatmate are having a slanging match over Facebook although not to each other. They're just writing petty statuses. FML!

Are they vaguebooking? Statuses like "omg so cant believe the nerve of sum ppl!!" or "im so upset :(:( wah * wah" are the worst. Just as bad are the inevitable replies of "whats up hun, inbox me xxx" followed by the original poster saying they don't want to talk about it. Not saying your ladyfriend and/or flatmate are guilty of this Ben, but if they are they're absolute toilets.

They are virtually children, so of course they are being immature. But that's what Facebook is all about - attention seeking.

I don't get this pride in not using certain types of social networking. If your interests are vested in it, if you have a practical social need for it, or if your peer group all use a certain social networking site - then you will use it.

If you're not interested in sharing information about your life, thoughts or keeping up with the narcissism of your peer group - then you won't use it.

I have contacted people on LinkedIn and Facebook for work/friend porpoises, but never wanted to share what I was doing with the rest of the world.

I've never had a MySpace account. MySpace was for kids and a horrible *. Facebook seems to be going the same way.
I use Twitter, but rarely post. Twitter is my preferred social network.

I think Facebook's answer will be to create a sister version of itself.

The existing audience is SO strong that any major change will get the company massive negative press from the morons who whine whenever anything is changed (then they adapt to the change, and moan about the next change), but huge changes are needed in Facebook - and they recognise that. Twitter's future isn't all that safe - the monetisation of it hasn't been very effective, and they've got a lot of very negative aspects to their service (anonymity, abuse etc.).

Interesting to see what the next step is though.

I deleted my account about two years ago. In the time between logging in and reaching the stage of the process where you click to finally delete it, I had received 15 messages from strange men trying to chat me up. That tells you everything you need to know about myspace.

Ahhh MySpace. My last update on there before abandoning it:

Antique. I havent even logged into it for donkeys. Facebook is becoming MummyBook. One of my cousins and various other friends (or not so friends - only a number to boost their friend count) just post pictures of their children/nephews/nieces and post status' that could bore anyone to tears in a normal conversation after 30 seconds. Apart from that, I only use it as a communication tool via chat or organising events just a light reminder for the forgetful. I don't even bother post anything remotely personal now as I don't like the idea a large corp has control over my images. If Facebook died tomorrow; I don't think many would realise 4-5 years of their life in images would be gone and I bet they didn't take a backup of those images on their computers. I see that Facebook should go back to its roots. Strip back the applications/games that litter it and push those onto a separate service now they have money and the platform to do it.

Twitter is awesome. There's a level of anonymity that keeps banter on there fun and allows you to be creative about your personal experiences. Much more sustainable than Facebook in the long-term, but I see it's risk in the short-term.

Facebook: Older kids and young adults talking to each other -- it's about the personal.

Twitter: A way for celebs to keep in touch with fans and for everyone else to over-share.

There was a BBC documentary on last week about their gun laws, especially linked to the self-protection law they had introduced lately. Some shocking cases where people have taken advantage of that law. One instance where a man noticed two black guys get into their neighbours house when they werent in. The neighbour called to report it, they then said "should I go and shoot them to down?", the operator said no and wait just in case they break in. The neighbour said no, I know the law allows me to protect myself (even though he wasnt in any danger) and then shot them both. He then got off scott free because of this law even though it was clear murder.

Quite a few other things surprised me. The biggest one where laws are discussed by a committee of various private firms (who have a huge influence) and the public. Very suspect indeed.

My Facebook is deactivated for now, I'll be back on there at some point soon though.
I've still got my MySpace, which I started back in 2007 and which hasn't been updated much since then. I've also still got a Bebo page which I started the same year - God, that's like a time capsule now.
I've got a YouTube account too, which I only really use to comment on other videos with at the moment.
The main way I communicate with the world right now is on Twitter.

I too have implemented a policy of not clicking on DM links. Someone I know on fb posts about 5 news stories a day from there - he makes it very difficult for me at times...
