The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

Humph... Back from Portugal, was hoping it'd been decided this was all a sick joke and CM was back on breakfast... No such luck, eh?

He does that at least 30 mins before the end of his show. Signs that features are a little lacking? Not heard much between 6:30am - 9am recently. Been Chris Evans on my DAB Radio recently.

I hadn't listened to it till last week but I found myself with no music (memory card corrupted) so thought I'd give it a try. I'm one of the few people on here (from what I can tell!) who actually enjoys the playlist music as well.

Honestly? there's nothing awful about his show. It's very generic and there doesn't seem to be a huge amount of substance in it, but it was no worse than any other breakfast show. There are a few things which stuck out to me though:

- The 'fade in fade out' - I really don't get this, Chris Moyles took the mick out of the Radio Malta clip for ages, yet Nick Grimshaw does exactly that. I'm sure I'd get used to it, but there is really no need to fade up the bed every time there's a gap in a sentence.

- The semi-zoo format does not work. I very quickly got fed up of hearing Matt ('Finchy') in the background, with everything he does, says or thinks relayed through Nick.

I'm not a fan of the 'wheel of four-tunes' feature either. I tuned in on Thursday and all four tunes were the same... I didn't really get it.

I had to do a presentation a while ago on 'my favourite presenter' at work and picked Chris Moyles - and analysing it, I think one of the reasons he appeals to so many people is (apart from his great technical skills) because he manages to involve the audience in their lives - and their lives were on the whole quite normal. You felt like they were on the same level as you. I just don't get that with Nick - he's broadcasting directly at you, but you don't feel like you know him.

Ultimately, I'm never going to be happy with any replacement. I just feel the R1 Breakfast Show should be setting an example and providing world-class broadcasting. Right now, it feels like a generic, cheap local radio show, with nothing to set it apart from the rest.

This morning he interrupted Tina's weather with the waking up song. I couldn't figure out if it was accidental or deliberate, but he didn't say anything about it...

Didn't he say afterwards that Tina might be mad at him because she isn't at her desk like usually?

BTW does anyone know how the ratings are for his show?

Not until the RAJARs come out there aren't 'overnights' for radio like you get in TV.

So on Thursday we will get the data for the end of Chris on breakfast but Grimmy's first ratings (Q4) won't be released until the end of January. Obviously Ben Cooper will be hoping that the trend of ratings dropping over the summer holidays continues so that Grimmy starts from the lowest possible base.

Oh, maybe that was while I was in the shower.

Of course Ben will be looking at the 15-29 demo and will talk about the average age (assuming it drops) however he equally doesn't want loads of press reports like those Matthew Bannister had in the early-mid 90s about millions switching off. If he can start Grimmy from a low base it gives him the best chance of 'succeeding'.

I'm gonna admit that it makes me laugh that Grimmy calls her 'Lana Del Lolz'. I'm wondering if he'll say that to her face if they ever get her in as a guest.

Doesn't look like that's gonna be a problem, I didn't realise the graphs have been going down for a while (except for a couple of blips): http://www.mediauk.com/radio/309/bbc-ra ... ng-figures

I'm assuming you mean Lana Del Ray? Is there a reason he does that?

I don't know. He didn't explain it and that's kinda why I found it funny. Maybe it's an old joke from his evening shows.

Fair enough.

I'm sure it's very funny ;)

I think Scott Mills started it - he was calling her Lana Del Lolz ages ago.
It makes me smile too.

While the chat part of Grimmy's show is average - every time I've listened the music has been fantastic, gritty new stuff mixed with a few cheesy songs. I think that must be a lot to do with Matt Fincham as well as Grimmy.

Gritty?

May I enquire as to precisely how the music is gritty?
