I watched it and thought "great, the BBC finanally doing journalism the right way"

The self effacing journalist, fat and puffing up a hill on a bike whilst quotes of all the names he had been called was very effective.

It sums up the red tape we all face, and the blind stupidity of those with money and in power! ( Red tape is good when you can't spell beaureracy)

Ok, jus' watched it and I echo your annoyance Toph. What a pair of twunts. Clearly two men who have never had a good old punch in the chops to remind them of the consequences of their actions when taking into acount the impact on lives of others. Being a billionaire should not be a ticket to do what the feck you want to who the feck you want, flaunting both written law and unwritten decency.

Does put into context the outrage we all (not us forumers, but the UK as a whole) showed in regard of news of tax avoiders, like Jimmy Carr (mentioned in the programme), and how insignificant that is in the grand scheme of things.

Criminals.

Stupid decorator we have doing the flat up at the moment. Underestimates the number of tiles needed for the bathroom so we have to put things on hold for a day while THREE tiles are delivered. THREE.

Also, I don't think he's EVER showered, the man reeks.

My neighbour who is a jobless lay about has just informed me that I make too much noise closing the front door when coming in from work. That must mean he sits by the front door of his flat waiting for me to come in as the lay out of thr flat means both his bedroom and living room are furthest away from my door. Took a fair bit of restraint not to give him a slap.
Before anyone says "be quieter then" I must point out I deliberately don't slam the door for the very reason it might disturb others. The guy needs a life.

Instagram saying they now reserve the rights to sell off the photos that users upload...

/sigh

Anyone whose instagram photos are so private and precious that they actually have reason to care about that clearly shouldn't be uploading those photos onto the web. Everyone else is panicking about photos of their dinner, fingernails and/or cats being in the public domain.

This is annoying me because of all the hype that's surrounding it.

Most of the people frantically deleting their accounts will have no pictures that anyone would be interested in commercially.

The most likely application of this feature would be to allow companies (or any approved vendor) to purchase the API connected with photos that are hashtagged with their company (or specific hashtag).

For example, Vogue would be able to run a competition which people post their favourite outfit by purchasing a hashtag like #vogueoutfits. Then instagram could sell the API (a means of automatically pulling through information from one website to another) to vogue and they could display instagram pictures directly on their site.

The marketing side of it makes complete sense, but as usual everyone has overreacted. Facebook deserve to be able to make a profit on a business they acquired for £1bn, and any provider of social media deserves to be able to monetize it's service.

edit. Something which Twitter will allow anybody in the world to do for free (regardless of whether they're a company or not)

"Monetise", you're not American.

If people are happy to sign away their photos/work which Facebook may or may not make money off, that's up to them but it's a pretty unethical way to try and rake back the ludicrous amount of money that was spent acquiring instagram - saying they OWN the pictures that people uploaded? If they allowed users to agree to having their work being used then noone would have an issue but it's this sudden changing of terms of service that is winding most people up.

And facebook "deserve" to be able make a profit purely because they spent a billion pounds? Really? As Nic implies, 99% of it is pointless crap taken by people with iphones so quite why a billion pounds was spent on it, lord only knows.

The logistics involved in getting all of their users to opt in would be a nightmare, it's MUCH easier for them to do it en masse and lose a chunk of their user base.

Instagram TOU wrote:"To help us deliver interesting paid or sponsored content or promotions, you agree that a business may pay us to display your username, likeness, photos, in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions, without any compensation to you,"

This is something that Twitter already does, and unless your account is protected you are included. It's an auto opt in. Something which most social media utilise.

Bruvva wrote:saying they OWN the pictures that people uploaded?

They don't say that. That's just what's been written and repeated in the articles that have come out today.

Instagram TOU wrote:Instagram does NOT claim ANY ownership rights in the text, files, images, photos, video, sounds, musical works, works of authorship, applications, or any other materials (collectively, "Content") that you post on or through the Instagram Services. By displaying or publishing ("posting") any Content on or through the Instagram Services, you hereby grant to Instagram a non-exclusive, fully paid and royalty-free, worldwide, limited license to use, modify, delete from, add to, publicly perform, publicly display, reproduce and translate such Content, including without limitation distributing part or all of the Site in any media formats through any media channels, except Content not shared publicly ("private") will not be distributed outside the Instagram Services.

Facebook, or any social media isn't a right - they're a company that provide event hosting software, facilitate worldwide communications, instant chat, image hosting (and much more) and they have to make money somehow. If you don't want to be part of that then delete your account and don't use their service.

Easier to do en masse doesn't mean it's right though, in fact it's fairly snidey way of doing it. And just because another company does something, doesn't mean it's right and that everyone should just roll over and accept it.

Yes, they have to make money but flickr manages it without pissing anyone off. Mind you, if they wanted to make money, they should have thought twice about spending 1 billion dollars on a file hosting site.

On the warpath at work, someone is doing something they shouldn't be doing - and when I find out who it is, they shall be in BIG trouble (well, as much as you can be in a professional workplace).

I hate it when untrained people mess with my chi.

I can feel a stern email coming on... Grrrrr.

I've just had a customer who booked the wrong show online, had his tix posted and never bothered to check them until it was too late. I explained (in my well rehearsed, calm way) that as a charitable trust who has to answer to an outside production company, we can't give him free tickets to the right show. I refused to engage with his comments about how "disgusting" it was that we can't do it, so he started trying to make personal comments about how it must "make me feel good" to refuse to take the financial rap for his mistakes. Yeah, I'm just a mean spirited bitch who enjoys ruining people's Christmas, as opposed to a poorly paid lackey who has no authority to go against policy. What a MASSIVE TWAT.

I know the feeling, it's amazing how many customers think we're responsible for their mistakes. Can't call them idiots either, because we're in retail. That said, if it's their fault I do quietly enjoy their misery if they're being a dick. They deserve it.

Having to call the police at work due to a very drunk and abusive guy and then hold him away from the people he was accusing of being drug dealers and pimps. Still only my 3rd last day of work before Christmas. Ho ho * ho.
