The logistics involved in getting all of their users to opt in would be a nightmare, it's MUCH easier for them to do it en masse and lose a chunk of their user base.

This is something that Twitter already does, and unless your account is protected you are included. It's an auto opt in. Something which most social media utilise.

Facebook, or any social media isn't a right - they're a company that provide event hosting software, facilitate worldwide communications, instant chat, image hosting (and much more) and they have to make money somehow. If you don't want to be part of that then delete your account and don't use their service.
