Russell Brand does stand up comedy and is a comedian. Do your research.

Russell Brand's success hasn't come as a comedian. He is a presenter who cashed in on his popularity by doing poorly received stand up, lapped up by teens who saw him as a pioneer of surrealism.

He's as much as a comedian as Chris Moyles.

Good edit I believe you thought calling me ignorant could've been taken as a personal insult.

* right off Jay, I put ignorant teens, and then deleted it thinking better of it as I didn't want to be overly inflammatory.

If you think that Brand is a pioneer of surrealist comedy then you are ignorant.

Well Travis also seemed to think that Russell is a comedian.

Well I don't. For the reasons that I have outlined.

I believe I likened his career to Chris Moyles' stand up career.

Ok, I'm going to apologise and just say that ok the presenting came first but I consider him a comedian and I get that his stand up was poorly recieved but I don't care I like it. You can consider him not to be a comedian and I will.

chrysostom is wrong. Simple as that.

The order of the career path is neither here nor there.

I saw Russell Brand at the Birmingham Hippodrome, the Warwick Arts Centre and the Manchester Apollo and I can assure you all that Russell Brand is indeed a comedian. I also saw him at the NIA when he started doing arenas and became big-time, and he was just a pale imitation of what he once was, but it was still stand up comedy.

Russell Brand is a presenter and actor. He is also a comedian. And, at his best, a better comedian than anything else.

Sorry Travis, I apologise. If that's your definition of a comedian then you're 100% right. In the same way that Moyles is a musician, actor and stand up. And the same way that Michael Jordan was a famous baseball player. There's just no wiggle room!

Russell Brand has had a perfectly legitimate career in stand up comedy, but I'll leave you to think what you like

Frankie Boyle just tries to be as offensive as possible, with little comic skill.

Alludes.

You know, I don't think I've ever actually realised there was a difference between the 2.

I think I may be one of the few who appreciates a spelling/grammar correction!

Some people do. Those who enjoy hugging for example.

(I didn't really need to post this, but I thought it would be worth it to block Nic out of the forum)

No, I said that ignorant teens held up Brand as a pioneer of surrealism.

Then I edited it out as I thought it was too much for what is essentially a bit of a silly argument.

Once I edited it, Jay said that I edited it because I was scared of being banned as I was aiming a personal insult at him (which I wasn't as it was a lot of teens in general, and I'm not sure that calling someone ignorant is severe enough to be deemed a personal insult).

But then I reiterated that you would be ignorant if you thought Brand was a pioneer of surrealism. Much like the people who hold up The Mighty Boosh as groundbreaking surrealist TV (while I like the Boosh a lot, I don't think they were groundbreaking).

Lots of people are overly analytical and critical about things - one of mine is comedy! Just a hangover from Uni stuff and reviews I'd write.

edit. hugging.

That woman's voice (Diane Morgan, aka Philomena Cunk) grates on me so badly. Her accent probably isn't massively different from mine, which is somewhat alarming. Maybe it's the tone of her voice as much as her accent, I dunno. Either way, I find her almost impossible to watch without just getting irritated.
