It's time for my Saturday night out story!
Last night Mr Red was DJing his regular gig and they had hired two well known local DJs for the night, both from rock radio stations. They billed it as a 'DJ battle' and Mr Red was 'refereeing' which in practice meant he'd open and close the night. He wasn't massively thrilled at this, but took it in his stride.
Anyway, when I got there these two DJs were hanging out together and Mr Red was just starting his set. He played for about an hour, then the first guy came on. He was clearly drunk, staggering and swaying and calling the crowd see-you-next-Tuesdays on the mic. The second guy took over after about half an hour and whilst rather more compus mentis than the other one, Mr Red astutely observed that he was "coked off his bits".
While Coked Up DJ was playing, one of the guys who runs the club came into the booth and observed Drunk DJ still hanging around, staggering and falling over, generally being, well, battered. He hastily asked Mr Red to take over and took Coked Up DJ aside to admonish him for their various levels of intoxication and the shambles that had resulted.
Mr Red played for the rest of the night, during which time Drunk DJ wandered around the stage whilst his producer, an intern, tried to restrain his behaviour. Eventually he collapsed behind the deck where he remained passed out on the floor for quite some time, and several people including Mr Red and Coked Up DJ took photos on their phones. The intern finally managed to take him home, and Mr Red was congratulated by the club owners for rescuing the night.
This morning Mr Red had a message from one of the owners asking him to take the photo of Drunk DJ passed out off Facebook, saying that it would reflect badly on the club and get them into trouble with the guy's radio station, as they'd think that the club had got him that drunk. As if he was a 12yr old being peer pressured on a park bench! He was a menace all night and Mr Red, who is not one of their big celeb guest DJs, had to save the evening. I observed an hour or so later that Coked Up DJ had tweeted his pic of Drunk DJ, but he hasn't removed it. I dunno if he was asked to.
Anyway, I was thoroughly annoyed that Drunk DJ had done his best to make a laughing stock of the club, and Mr Red doesn't receive the appreciation he deserves for being a professional, but instead ends up having to help the club protect the reputation of a drunk idiot. I was also annoyed that a girl turned to me and described the music as a "f**ing joke" cos Mr Red hadn't played her request quickly enough, obviously not realising that I was his girlfriend...but that's another story
