It's excellent. A hundred times better than the dross that Kirsten Dunst and Toby McGuire churned out.

I loved the Amazing Spider Man and I thought it was a brilliant film. I don't know if it was better than the one's with Toby Maguire in though, purely because I grew up with them and I've watched them so many times and still think that they're a great films. The amazing Spider Man was really good though.

I suspect we'll give it another try when we're alert and focused!

I just started reading the book last week. Not very far into it though. I've been told that it all really starts to make sense about half way through. Maybe that's true with the movie version? I'll watch it after I've finished reading the book. Mark Kermode reviewed the movie on this weeks Mayo/Kermode show and he said it was a movie with big ideas that failed. Overall a negative review. Several listeners disagreed with him though and said it was one of the best movies they've ever seen.

As mentioned elsewhere, Total Recal (orig, not the remake) - what a film.

My wife and I took the kids to see Wreck it Ralph yesterday afternoon. Definitely worth seeing IMO. Lots of fun. I was never much of a gamer so I don't know if all the games referenced directly or simply as background are real, but the ones I did recognize were funny.

I really want to see this film but unfortunately our cinema has been shut down now to make way for Bingo (seriously...)

I know that there was a reference to the old TMNT arcade game in it tho, they had to changed the art work and blur out part of the logo but you can see what it was

Took me a couple of minutes to find the TMNT game in that screen shot. Hopefully the Bingo will end soon and you can get to see the movie (that definitely is a weird reason to close a cinema- isn't that what Bingo halls are for?). I will say unless you really are up on your arcade games, many of them will pass by unnoticed. And it's going to take a lot of analyzing screen grabs to see everything they put into the film. I could see them having a bonus feature on the DVD devoted solely to which games made it into the film.

On a tangential note - if you really like gaming, you should check out the book "Ready Player One" by Ernest Cline. It's currently in development for a movie version as well.

The games that are feature heavily are all fictional. Many of the secondary characters wandering around the arcade are classic game characters, though.

There's a pause feature on the BD where Chris Hardwick pops up and explains a lot of this stuff. It's very annoying and you can;t turn it off. I don't like Hardwick though, so that doesn't help.

Thanks, I thought that might be the case. I would not be surprised to see someone develop real games based upon the 3 games that were featured prominently though. Seems to be the trend with these kind of movies.

I'm not a Hardwick fan either. He started showing up on BBC America within the last year or two. My first thought was "Who is this guy?" I tried listening to his Nerdist podcast, and found it pretty dull. And yet he's got a tv version of the podcast starting on BBCA at the end of this month. Not sure if I'm going to bother checking it out.

Watched Rise of the Guardians with my daughter yesterday afternoon. We got her the blue ray for an early Easter present. Good, but not great.

We watched it too, but can tell the kids didn't think it was amazing as they didn't ask to watch it again today

Our newest member - agungkurniawa - triggered a wee brain fart this morning.

A-gung-kurni-awa

Sounds like the cry from Egg Chen to Lo Pan at the end of their magic battle off and Lo pan is running off with Miao Yin and Gracie Law.
Remember that bit, they've gone up the escalator, through the big scary mouthy thing, he lobs a magic grenade at him.
BOOM!!!!!!!!
He then shouts something like A-GUNG-KURNI-AWA!!!!

Ahh...

Great film.

Finally got to see Argo. Recently finished the book before seeing the movie and I was really surprised at how much the original story was embellished. I had anticipated some changes from actual events, but they really invented a lot of things that never happened. Made it hard for me to enjoy the movie.

Also recently saw The Iron Lady with Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher. Thought that was pretty good. Has Thatcher really lost it that much or is that a whole lot of artistic license?
