A bit late, but a hard drive thrashing is not the sign of it dying. For future reference, use something like CrystalDiskInfo to tell you if your drive is dying.
EVERYTHING looked like failing hard drive though. Ah well, an extra 2TB of storage is not to be sniffed at.
The only everything you need to know is the SMART report. No dying hard drive will thrash. If you hear whining, the bearings are going. Other than that, it'll either stop spinning up or you'll see read or write errors or reallocated sectors in SMART.
I'm selling off my collection of old hard drives (about 40 of 'em) on FleaBay at the moment, so they are all being tested!
