Mine were Nana (mum's mum) and Grandma (dad's mum). It never occured to me that Nana sounded like a goat...but my Nana had her kids quite old (she was 40 when she had my mum), so by the time she was a Nana she must have been around 60, so maybe she wasn't too concerned about it making her feel old.

My dad's mum is Nana, my mum's mum before she died was Granny. My mum is Granny to Reuben, Joel and Rosie. Cat's mum is Nanny to Reuben, Lucy and Andrea.

In Tamil there are individual terms for most family members. Maternal & Paternal grandparents have different names, Uncles/Aunts who are older/younger than your parent have different names etc. It's VERY confusing.

We do have some fun with it.

We have a Nanny Bath ( she's since moved)
A Nanny No Chips (she used to run a burger waggon and ran out of chips some times)
and a Grandad news, as when he comes he won't let the kids watch anything other than the news!

Have they never made an attempt to get back and see you even once?!

They are both dead now. They are Iranian so lived over there all their lives. My nan died when I was about 10 and my grandad lived until he was 100 years old and died in 2002. With Iran being like it is economically it would be very hard for the average Iranian worker to be able to save the money to get over here not to mention the issues they could have getting through customs in Iran. They are very funny over there about travel to the UK and America.
I've always wanted to go out to Iran but unfortunately unless I get an Iranian passport it would be impossible. Due to there no longer being a British embassy in Iran I would never get clearance to go. If I tried to go out there they can do all sorts to me including making me do National Service which is something I would never want to be part of.

Fair enough - that does sound like a tough situation, must have been hard.

When I was dragged to see Robbie Williams a good few years ago now, Basement Jaxx supported and were very good. Williams, not so much... good entertainer, just not very good songs.

No, I've always thought "Nan" and "Nana" are ridiculous things to call a grandparent. Even as a child I remember thinking how stupid it sounded when my friends referred to their Nan or Nana. I had Grannies. My mum is Granma (no d) to my kids. I would prefer not to be labelled in that way, but I have to be called SOMETHING - I like the idea of an ethnic twist on a similar theme, so we'll go with that. Although Boboff's suggestion of Yuds was probably more what I had in mind originally!

It is nice. Might be more difficult for a 1 - 2 year old to get the hang of saying, but I don't think that should be a reason not to consider it!
