I don't think he particularly lives an extravagant life - probably owns his house, and his overheads can't be that high. I'd estimate around £70k for 12 months of living well - which I am sure that someone who has looked after their money can afford.
If he comes back before he's ready or with the wrong project, then it could significantly impact on the rest of his career.
Let the man rest, and hopefully come back better, harder, faster, stronger.
