It just feels like a game of Jenga - with every positive result it gets more impressive, but there's a sense that it'll come toppling down any second. This consistency is more stressful than when we're struggling!

Just as an aside...

32 teams in CL action this week, 352 players.

SEVEN of them English.

OK, historically, English players have never really played abroad but here's the list (and I'm talking about starting elevens here but I'll run an eye over subs as I'm doing the list) :

Chelsea : Terry, Cahill - subs : Cole, Lampard
Arsenal : Gibbs - subs : Jenkinson, Hayden
Celtic : Forster - subs ???
Man Citeh : none - subs Hart, Richards, Lescott, Milner
Man U : Smalling, Ferdinand, Rooney - subs Jones, Young

Arsenal have quite a good English representation in their squad with about 20% of our first team squad being English (in Oxlade-Chamberlain, Walcott, Wilshere as well as Gibbs & Jenkinson) - but it's certainly not easy to do have English players playing regularly at Champions League teams, purely because we don't produce as many good players as other countries.

I'm firmly of the belief that if young players were willing to travel to other countries in order to play regularly at good teams then they would become much better players. Otherwise it's a choice between Arsenal, Utd, Chelsea, City, Tottenham or Everton or Liverpool - and in most of those squads you're likely to be superceded by better players from abroad, due to an increased necessity to win and have a reduced amount of playing time.

If Adam Johnson moved from City to another modestly successful European club (Shalke, Leverkusen, Sociedad etc.), I think he would be in the England squad - as he'd be playing with better players, likely be statistically better and have more confidence. The same could be said of any 'budding England stars' who have ended up under performing and moving from to a big club too soon, then to a small club.

English players hate moving, as they think it will spell the end of their international career - for all his faults, I genuinely think Hodgson's past European managing experience would mean this isn't the case.

Ah well, I've always maintained that the relative lack of poverty in the UK (and increased focus on higher education) when compared to more successful footballing nations will always mean we won't be producing reams of players who are desperate to make it at the highest level.

To be fair to Arsenal and United, both of those teams seem happy to give the English kids a go. The more moneyed clubs (and yes that's a relative term but by that I mean Chelsea/City) seem a lot more willing to just buy foreign players in. I can't help thinking that the expectation of instant success in our domestic league is damaging the English team in the long term.

Anyway, this'll be a kick in the teeth for Adrian Chiles : http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/24879138

Oh, meant to add. Was watching the Liverpool game through nefarious internet means and the irish commentator actually said "Liverpool fans will be rooting for Man Utd tomorrow".

Not even if they were playing a team of baby killing nazi zombies. I'd still want the horrendous * to get battered. So basically, "Come on Arsenal" tomorrow.

My only comment on last night's football....Smalling, * me. WHY is he considered international quality?

Is it that he is all there is? I've watched so little Premiership football that I don't even know who else might be considered in defence these days.

Stephen Caulker should be in the reckoning - been very solid for the last 3 seasons (all in the prem), he's young & athletic as well as Cardiff captain.

Having said that, it should be about partnerships - Rio and Terry were great on their own, but rarely hit the heights that their combined ability should have got them.

Gordon Strachan was sniffing about Caulker, seeing if he could get him to come play north of the border which, quite frankly, would be great news. Our choices at centre back are VERY limited. First choice partnership at the moment seems to be Grant Hanley and Russell Martin, who's a full back. In fairness, they've not been terrible but Caulker would be a nice wee addition.

Mirallas is a * shithouse, incidentally, should have walked for that. But, hey ho, draw's a decent enough result.

That was a horrible challenge and he should have gone off for it. Normally I'd be hoping the victim was ok, but as its Suarez I don't much care.

Ah well, he'll be off to Madrid in June anyway. Because, y'know, they need more attacking players.

Oh wait, just seen Shrek's assault on Much. Referees are having a shocker this weekend.

Some of the refereeing this weekend has been very questionable. Wes Brown's and Bolasie's reds were very soft, yet Rooney and Mirallas got nothing?

Wayne Rooney has been having a go at Martin Tyler for mentioning that he should have been sent off. Tells you something about the human potato.

What was the ref thinking? If he didn't see it, then he can't give anything - if he DID see it, how is it not a straight red card? I know refs are sometimes lenient about giving yellow cards that early in a match, giving the players time to settle down and all that crap - but that was just ridiculous, you can't excuse that decision.

Thanks to Deadly for RT'ing the message from a transexual woman in Liverpool claiming to have had an affair with Brendan Rodgers. Gave me a lol.

Could you imagine? *shudder*

He'd probably sing YNWA all the way through

*urgh*

Heh, what a marvellous day of football.

All the Spurs fans I know have vanished.

Also, full backs scoring is one of the acest things in football :

I would chuckle at Arsenal but city are going to batter a LOT of teams at home this season.
