Freeview would be ideal as I have a TV capture card and can easily schedule it and record it off there. It really depends what the quality is like though. Some of the commercial stations have good quality, like Capital, but most of them are pretty abysmal, even for mono.

James H wrote:That's a good point. I'm nearly within FM range of 104.9, but Maidstone is probably just too far away to get a decent FM signal!

As for Freeview, the current XFM website says that due to costs of being on Freeview (bandwidth is at a big premium) they won't be on there and have no plans to. This could change with Global's multi-million pound budget for Radio X of course!

I do my way in Ilford, unfortunately I am laptopless at the mo and my Mini Disc recorder is packed away somewhere so I can't even do it that way, plus I'm away in Greece his first week back (typical, I was in Rome during his last week of Radio 1 and missed out on a chance 9f been in the audience of the penaultimate (sp) show) so I'm relying on you ladies & gents with capturing it tbh ;)

Greatly excited about Chris' return to radio!

I've had a blast downloading the replays for the past two and a bit years and listening to and from work. Any thoughts as to whether these will continue through the last BBC show?

Here's to hoping RadioX comes to SiriusXM so I can listen time-delayed in the car. Of course, the great archival efforts in the works are greatly appreciated, too.

Hi all. New user, previous long-time devoted TCMS listener who has been scrapping around for a replacement breakfast show for 3 years without much success. I'm no longer in the UK but fully intend to wake up to Moyles again on delay from the 21st.

Thought I'd sign up to help clarify answers to a few technical questions and dispel some myths I've seen on the board about the new station.

  • Radio X will be available nationwide on DAB digital radio on the D1 national commercial multiplex from 14th September. Basically, if you live in a populated area, chances are you will pick this up. If you already have a DAB radio, check through your stations list for Absolute and Absolute 80s. If they are there, you will be able to pick up Radio X when it launches. If you can't find these stations, try moving your radio near to a window and ensure any external wire or telescopic aerial is pointing straight up. It looks as though Radio X will be in 80 kbps MP2 Mono from launch. This is not the best audio quality, so if you're an audio geek FM, online or digital TV might be a better option.

  • Radio X will also go out on 104.9 FM in London and 97.7 FM in Manchester, replacing the existing XFM. They is some overspill into surrounding areas so check to see if you can pick up anything on these frequencies if you are nearby. The output on these stations will be identical to the DAB output (aside from possibly a few localised adverts and traffic reports). The London FM licence is a 'regional' licence which means no localised output is required if the station is also broadcast on national DAB. The Manchester licence is a local licence but Radio X's owners are taking advantage of a new regulation that means no local output is required if the service is considered to be 'specialist' (which Radio X's "fresh rock and guitar-based music" is). XFM Scotland in Glasgow and Paisley on 96.3 is closing because they couldn't get around the requirement to broadcast a minimum 7 hours of local content from Scotland.

  • Those who wish to listen through their TV can pick up Radio X on the following platforms: Sky channel 113; Virgin channel 960; Freesat channel 723. There are currently no plans for Radio X to be broadcast on Freeview.

  • There are lots of options for listening online. Here are some of the better ways:
Via the Radio X website or app http://www.radiox.co.uk/
Via the UK Radioplayer website or app http://radioplayer.co.uk/ (only available within the UK)
    Via the Radiofeeds website http://radiofeeds.co.uk/
    Via the TuneIn Radio app
Via the Yourmuze.fm website or app http://www.yourmuze.fm/

XFM currently has two online streams, one 48 kbps aacplus stream and one 128 kbps MP3 stream (visible on the Radiofeeds page) and these are likely to remain unchanged for Radio X. Both are good quality stereo and sound much better than the mono DAB feed. If you are concerned about a mobile data cap, the 48 kbps aacplus stream will consume far less data. If you need to go lower than that, Yourmuze.fm allows you to select your own aacplus bitrate with decent results down to about 24 kbps.
If you listen every full TCMS in an average month, that is around 80 hours of listening. A 48 kbps stream will consume 1.7 Gb a month. A 128 kbps stream will eat up 4.6 Gb per month.

  • Recommended options for recording the show are TuneIn Radio Pro and RadioRecorder.co.uk
TuneIn Radio Pro is a paid mobile app which allows you to set a recording for a particular time. In order to record your phone will need to be powered on and you will need an active data connection. Recording is not available on the free version of TuneIn.
RadioRecorder is an add-on to the Radiofeeds website. The great thing about this option is that it is free (only requires you to create a free user account) and allows you to schedule recordings to the cloud. This means your computer/phone doesn't need to be on and the recorded file will be saved to the cloud for later download.

  • In terms of podcasting, XFM London currently has a weekly 'best of' Jon Holmes podcast (similar to the old R1 best of Moyles pod) available through the station website, on iTunes and TuneIn. They haven't yet announced plans for a Moyles podcast. There is no official way to listen back to full XFM shows on demand and I don't expect this to change when Radio X launches.

Sorry for the long first post. Hope there's some useful info in there. Bring on the 21st!

That is actually inaccurate, I've done it many times. You go to the listen again feature at xfm.co.uk

Thanks for the correction. Do you have a link to an example listen again page? I can see a load of podcasts on the website but these tend to have all the music cut out for the likes of Jon Holmes and Josh Widdicombe. Maybe I'm getting geoblocked because I'm outside the UK?

I'm on September 2005 right now pretty much 400 shows behind the current day in the replays and all stored on my iPod.

Luckily I have a DAB car radio so looking forward to my 40 minute drive to work on Monday 21st from 6:45.
Hoping there is an official podcast or something created on here as the archive has been invaluable.

I listened to most of the shows live but then I had a year of unemployment where waking for the show was pretty much non existent and that is the period I am listening to now so it is all fresh to me and loving it as much as ever.
Will the daily feed continue? I hope so.

Hey folks

So i've been listening to all the archive shows, currently upto 2007. Thanks for providing all those.

In regards to Chris's new show, on XFM/RadioX......IF someone was unable to listen to the show live, does anyone know if they do a "listen again" feature like the BBC have? Or is their a chance, the shows might get recorded and archived somewhere?

Cheers

XFM currently has a listen again feature, and will presumably have one for Chris' show. They have also in the past had podcasts that you can subscribe to, such as on the iTunes Store, and again I presume they will want to have one for Chris' show.

In the past, the lovely people on this site have captured and archived full shows for us to hear, and as far as I can see are intending to do so again (I will be recording the first show as well just in case!).

Maybe we should have a nice sticky FAQ for these questions, in a similar vain to Frothy Bevvy's post?

I think the advertisers would have no issues having ads left in, as it's providing them with an extra source of free advertising. I can't see why taking them out would cause any issues that aren't already inherent in clipping the shows and making them available here. We all know the BBC didn't like us having the shows, which is why Aled wasn't able to provide us with copies of any of the ones we're missing after the R1 show ended, but they turned a blind eye. XFM might do the same or they might not. Besides which, leaving ads in will make for a horribly clunky listen.

I fail to see why Global won't provide a similar thing for RadioX

its free advertising for global for radio x as well as it being easier for us too download. plus the extra Internet exposure this site will bring the show.

Well I'm pretty sure nobody plans to ask their permission, we'll just start and see what happens. If they contact Chris and ask him to remove them, we'll take it from there. This is why it's a good idea to have lots of people making recordings. Should we be talking in code, do you think?

EDIT: Isn't this forum competely public? Would it not be an idea to at least need a login to view the forum? Might be able to slip under the radar a bit easier then?

Would the site endorse anything actually illegal? That risks the entire site being shut down...

Radio X is now available nationally on digital radio. It appeared automatically on mine but you may have to retune manually to get it. Playing non-stop music and 'Chris Moyles is back' trails at the moment.

As said previously, it is only in mono, so you will have to listen online if you want it in higher quality and/or stereo.
