Hip Hop is a great genre of music, but you have to sift through a lot of crap (just like with any type of music) to find the really decent stuff. Most of the bilge is American by the way.

I hate the image that goes with it as well and the whole east coast/west coast thing. UK hip hop is something to be proud of though, we don't sell ourselves through a 'gangster image' etc that comes with the American rappers (although the same can be said for bands such as De La Soul). Then again rap and hip hop are also two different things I would never compare Eminem's music to say Jurrassic 5....
I could go on and on about this but my main point is I love hip hop and would defend it as being an original style of music that thousands can relate to, since it is rarely controlled by society or big music company's, it's music which is closer to home.

As for the whole image of hip hop, I blame the Americans and wannabe rappers who think it's all about image rather than def styles. You either like the genre or you don't, like all music there has to be something about it that you can relate to.

On the subject of language I do know a few dudes who do talk 'like dat'. You hear the odd word like 'def' or 'wak' but it sounds kind of natural to hear. The whole language thing is about defining the hip hop culture as being different and not bound to the rules of society.

I'm gonna stop now.

By the way I'm also a BIG barenaked ladies , jazz and Gorrillaz fan. My thiught for the day would be never to limit yourself to one kind of music, you'd be missing out on so much.

Apart from folk music, stay away from that.

For music you can't beat the XFM daytime playlist - a good selection of NME friendly rock (Hives, White Stripes, BRMC, TCTC), dancey indie, old punk songs (The Jam, Pistols) and credible hip-hop (Princess Superstar, Dilated Peoples, The Streets). AND they play bootlegs like the Jacknife Lee Missy Elliot booty and the new Gary Numan/Sugababes (by Richard X) one which is actually getting released as the next Sugababes single!!

Bad things about XFM is the jocks, who are usually more-music-less-talk. Exceptions to that are Eddie Temple-Morris & Jame Hyman who present The Remix, Ricky Gervais & Steve Merchent on Saturday afternoons and the breakfast host Christian O'Connell.

Have to disagree with Eddie (it's unusal I know!) - hip-hop is one of the most interesting, progressive forms of music around. The image is part of it, but surely that has become self-parodying now? Theres some great music that you could define as hiphop, likewise some absolute shit - but surely you should judge each piece of music by it's own merits and not dismiss a whole genre of music which you clearly know little about. Just give things a chance and be positive instead of slagging stuff off.

Yeah were mad up 'ere once i we nicked a tesco trolley and (get this) hid it round the corner, were totally Keeeraaaaaaaaazzzzzzy.

Xfm has easily got the best playlist, i heard people talking about R1 on tv and they called it border line radio...........Bollox, Christian O'Connell is borderline radio, Chris Moyles would be excelent on Xfm.

A lot of peoples opinions on HipHop are reflective on acts like Ja Rule and Nelly(radio1 playlist) but groups like Outkast, Dialated peoples and Mystikal musically are brilliant.
