lager is beer. bitter is also beer just different types. i know this is very sad but im sure on an episode of friends recently they looked up the definition of lager...

I always refer to bitter as beer though and lager as just lager. Not sure why.

Yeah, beer is lager and bitter. Lager's better though, although the odd Worthington doesn't go amiss.
