The BBC has introduced new guidelines over radio interviews after Ali G's foul-mouthed outburst on Sara Cox's Breakfast Show.

DJs are being advised to end interviews instantly if guests cross taste boundaries at times when youngsters could be listening.

Ali G's creator Sacha Baron Cohen littered his appearance on Cox's show with obscenities, and referred to sex and drugs.

The interview in February occurred during school holidays. At the time of the broadcast a Radio 1 spokesman said guests were not chosen on the basis of whether it was a break for pupils.

But Radio 1 has now revised its briefing procedures for guests, giving "special consideration to live interviews when children are likely to be listening."

If they are thought to have gone too far, guests will be given a warning but, if they persist, the interview will instantly end.

During his appearance, Baron Cohen told listeners early in the interview that he had "knobbed J-Lo," but he was allowed to continue for a further half-hour.

During that time he called Pop Idol runner-up Gareth Gates "spasticated", and called the ITV1 show's winner Will Young a "batty boy."

He also referred to language which had been bleeped out of his hit record Me Julie, and joked about smuggling drugs.

Cox apologised to listeners after the outburst and the BBC said sorry later in the day.

Oh I wanna hear it, i missed it! What he said wasn't THAT bad! "Spasticated" is hardly very much, it's usually little kids of about 6/7 I hear using it anyway!

To be honest, I can see the BBC's point and The Mails point but then again I'm sure "the kids" that were listening have heard much worse and probably nowadays say much worse day in day out ! ! ! Just my opinion though ! ! ! :D

hmmm....but he also used the word "mutha*****" Not too nice for the little kiddies. it's also at the top (either in 1st place or in 2nd) or the Radio Authority's list of worst obscenities. Whichever place it's in, the other one is c**t.
