I've noticed lately that the record industry moves a hell of a lot quicker than it used to. A year or two ago it just use to be dance acts that came and went without trace but now it seems to be all music genres. Here's what I mean, take a look at this week's top ten: -
1) Eamon - F**k It (I Don't Want You Back)
2) D12 - My Band
3) Maroon 5 - This Love
4) Anastacia - Left Outside Alone
5) The Rasmus - In the Shadows
6) Usher - Yeah
7) Marillion - You're Gone
8 ) Franz Ferdinand - Matinee
9) McFly - 5 Colours In Her Hair
10) DJ Casper - Cha Cha Slide (All Around the World)
With the exception of Anastacia, Usher and D12 the rest (70%) are all new acts with either their first or second single (I know Franz Ferdinand had a track before 'Take Me Out" so this is their third but it didn't get into the top 40 so I'm not counting it, okay!).
My point is this, do you think that Radio One (who in truth are responsible for promoting and breaking a lot of these artists) are moving too quickly or do we bore too easily? I question where The Darkness will be in two years time, does anyone remember Gay Dad?
Take a band like Keane, great band but are they just there to replace Coldplay? They both play Piano indie and Coldplay haven't released a single since August last year!
Will there ever be another "Oasis" who can release more than two successful albums and bucket loads of singles or will the industry just keep churning out a new band every two months and forget about the ones it's already cracked?
The reason I'm interested in this subject is because I know someone in a well known band that were quite successful in the mid to late 90's but didn't seem to well after that even though they were still producing good albums. The lead singer told me that the record company were concentrating a lot of their promotion and funding in new bands.
