'Saviour of Radio 1' Wins 680,000 New Listeners

Chris Moyles has lived up to his billing as “the saviour of Radio 1” by adding nearly 700,000 listeners to the breakfast show.
Radio 1 bosses were celebrating today after newly-released figures showed the DJ has helped revive the station’s fortunes.
Old breakfast show host Sara Cox was moved at the beginning of the year after a disastrous slump in ratings.
Since he replaced her in January, Moyles has put on 680,000 listeners to take the audience from 6.5 million to 7.18 million.
The figures, released by industry body Rajar, are for the 4+ age group.
In the 15+ age group, Moyles has pulled in an extra 410,000 listeners to boost the audience from 5.52 million to 5.93 million.
Radio 1’s total audience for the first three months of 2004 was 9.84 million, up from 9.44 million the previous quarter.
A spokesman said: “We are very pleased with the results, particularly for Chris Moyles who has had a great start on the breakfast show.”
Today’s news comes as a relief to Radio 1 bosses after the station fell to its lowest ever audience figures last year.
Sara Cox, who is expecting her first baby, took much of the blame and was moved to Moyles’ old afternoon slot after her audience dipped to just 5.4 million listeners.
Loud-mouthed Moyles, self-styled “saviour of Radio 1”, took over on January 5.
