Calling all technical boffs. I need/want to create a website. Yeah me, a website. This is gonna be a huge challange for me as I'm useless with computers, but amazingly I'm the most qualified to do it. I won't bore you with the details about whats going to be on it, but could someone recommened where I can get FREE webspace, and any websites which can explain to me what to do in non-jargen speech. It doesn't need to be as fancy as this site or anything like that, just someat simple. Am I in out of my depth here folks or is this actually possible? Any help will be greatly appriciated. Ta muchy!

Your ISP will usually provide webspace, which is your best bet as they don't include ads like tripod & geocities, I would steer cleer of them to be honest because they're just plain annoying! Tripod.co.uk I believe is better than .com as it lets you link images.

Which ISP are you with?

Are you planning on writing code or just using a program like Front Page to do it? If it's your first go I'd use a program, you should have Front Page on your computer, which makes it easy because it's all visual, there are loads of programs for webdesign, someone will recommend one.

Otherwise if you want to write code, http://www.htmlgoodies.com is good.

People who use Front Page should be shot.

Right, IMO, u should use a free program called First Page (http://www.evrsoft.com/download/)

With a web host you pay for what you get really, but if you decide against your own ISP, of Geocities you could use http://www.portland.co.uk, they offer a free service complete with CGI (which means you can use things like web counters and guestbooks, etc.)

HTML Goodies is very good, I used it myself, when I first started in HTML (the language you will need to design a basic web page.)

PM or email me (I am a bit p*ssed at the moment) so I can give you more details, but depending on how many hits you are hoping for per month, you may be able to get bosworthwaterbears.co.uk for around £10 for 2 years (just the domain name) and then a free hosting at portland. I use them (at the moment) What do bosworth water bears play?

I can do my best, I will be sober tomorrow, will be able to helop more! :)

I've gone with my own ISP, managed to get an address, I just need to set it up now! Html doesn't seem as bad as I thought though. And Topher - Bosworth Water Bears aren't a team, we are a Working Newfoundlands group! My mum and dad and their friends run it, as I said, its not very interesting, but this is all thats currently on the web about us, and the task to create a site has been left to me!

As I have found out, but at the end of the day, they offer a rare free service with CGI. Can anyone tell me about past experiences with Your Choice Budget? It seems a very good deal, I would like to know if anyone uses/has used them.

You will be up and running in no time with HTML (even I can bloody do it!)

DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT USE AUTHOURING TOOLS!!!!!!!!!!!

People who use web authoring tools such as Fronpage or Dreamweaver bug the crap out of me.

Learn HTML instead, it'll be benificial in the long run. Go to W3 Schools who give excellent tutorials on HTML and web programming languages.

True, but you'll still find it beneficial to learn at least basic HTML. Dreamweaver and Frontpage stick loads of crap in the HTML code that completely fecks it all up. If you know nothing about HTML then it can be very difficult to try and repair the HTML code without any knowledge.

It doesn't take long to learn, it's dead easy once you know the rules!

Sidla mate, using web authoring tools is not a bad thing. I agree that learning HTML is a very good idea (I can code HTML in my sleep) but DreamWeaver makes life so much easier. What's the point of adding to your workload? You can always go into code view to tidy things up and write any scripting. Plus you have the benefits of things like templates, find and replace across every file in a site, and many other benefits.

http://www.w3schools.com is a great site though....

I still think it's very beneficial to learn HTML, although, I've never used dreamweaver. Frontpage is the spawn of Satan though.

I agree with all of that. When I first started HTML, when a mate of mine who is wicked at web design got me into it, I was like "Oh my god, I'm so sh*t." Actually, its really easy though. And I'm starting to learn Perl! Might have to check the W3Schools site, if they have any Perl.

It's always good to know HTML. FrontPage is awful, but DreamWeaver is so good you'd be mad to use anything else. I haven't had the chance to try out DreamWeaver MX yet, but DreamWeaver Ultradev is very very good.
