crappy free sites with pop-ups are a good place to cut your teeth. i did that. http://come.to/hi5

now i'm classier and i have my own webspace. it's cool and it's going to be cheap. i like people who can make good sites the hardcore way-using notepad/vi/spc or the like. screw fancy programmes like dreamweaver. where's the fun in that?

Talking about pop-ups, I saw Scary Movie 3 today, and probably the best bit in the entire film was when the main woman person was browsing the internet and all you could see were masses of pop-ups appearing. It's funny cos it's true.

I took my brother to see that last Friday. It was marginally funny, but more aimed at his age, the 14/15 year olds.

I went to the 8.40 one because when my housemate bought the tickets there was a load of annoying load kids in front of her for the 7.40 one - but then there were annoying load kids in the 8.40 one too.

Just goes to show the types of people that movie wants to attract.

You sound like a right snob saying that.

It was pretty daft. I wouldn't rush off to see it again, but it was entertainment for 2 hours. It had some funny moments.

Have yourselves a look at my site, just something I've been working on for a couple of months. Got the domain name for £10 for 2 yrs, and the hosting is free from Velnet.co.uk. 20mb bandwith p/m, it does fine.

it could have been like me and kendrak.com. registering was easy. getting hosting took 5 minutes. it took my close to 2 months to do anything with it though. what's up right now took me only an hour or so, but technically, it took me a couple of months.

 As KendraK suggested, the site has only been up a couple of months, it's not two months of solid work thats gone into it. The actual design took about 3/4 of an hour.

Theres a lot of php script out there that will automatically create thumbnails etc on the fly at the server end, and put everything in to gallerys so all you have to do is upload one picture via a web based interface. But as I said, it's PHP and requires a thing called ImageMagik that your webhost would need to have installed... I used a script like this once before, was very good.

Try http://www.4homepages.de/ . It's very good. You can upload batches of images and automatically make thumbnails but you need ImageMagick, GD or NetPBM. A decent server should have at least one of these.

While we are on topic of finding out features for websites, how is it possible to have multiple users update stuff? (like the news or show reviews here) I have read that it is possible using ASP but I don't know how.

You probably want a weblog programme, such as Movable Type, B2, WordPress or pMachine. Most use SQL or similar, so you need some sort of database facility on your server, so are pretty tricky to set up. I think this site uses Coranto for it's reviews, although I am not sure.

ASP is not widely used for this sort of thing, PHP is better (it's not Microsoft).

If you want a simpler alternative try http://www.blogger.com , which is pretty good and doesn't need any hosting so is very easy to setup. Bravenet have a Weblog now but it is full of adds.

i use movable type, and it's really nice. it took me about 30 minutes to set up, and that was me setting it up. i'm horrible at stuff like that. (hence i broke my gallery last night). yeah. i totally love it.

Or you could code it yourself, and Perl is always a good one.
