Yeah I was reading his posts on the Sheffield Forums no too long back.

I doubt he really means everything he says, he just plays the devils advocate to get a rise out of people.

Yeah, that's basically what he said. Once one of the more articulate members of Sheffield Forum rang up, and Nick didn't win on that occasion.

His show is just like telesales, there are rules he plays by to get what he wants from people. And he always says something that is liable to rile a certain part of society, to provoke reaction, and to make better radio. That's if you like that type of thing, which I don't particularly.

Provoking reaction like that is hardly a new format; the likes of James Whale have been doing it for years. I have never been a big fan of the phone in format; it usually ends up being a dumping ground for dead opinions about asylum seekers, 9/11, the BBC etc., it doesn't really go anywhere.

Someone called Tom Binns used to do that show a couple of years ago who was very good, he just used to basically mess about for two hours.

The thing is that DJs who deliberately provoke reactions by saying powerful stuff can be very entertaining.

The reason Nick is rubbish is not becuase of the points he makes, but the way he does it.

He is so amateur. He thinks he is making interesting, well founded points, but they are bland and half baked. He makes it up as he goes along. He is a lazy DJ, just listening to the callers and pouncing on the odd things he hears. He sounds like he doesn't realise he's on the radio. And the questions he asks callers often make no sense - so if the caller doesn't know what he's talking about, they sound like THEY don't know what they're talking about.

Just opinion of course.

I agree, and I remember Tom Binns, Scottie McClue and Mark Meadowcroft before that. The difference being, Scottie especially, seemed to be able to provoke a reaction without coming across as a complete tit.

That said, Nick is a good listen for a laugh now and again.. shame they've shifted him back to an 11pm start.

Anyways *tries deperately to bring the thread back to some kind of topic* hypothetically.. do you reckon Chris Moyles with or without the team, would be able to handle and phone-in program, and more importantly, would it work?

Definitely. His Late Bit shows he did on the Chiltern Network and Capital FM around 10 years ago featured calls heavily. He was very good at taking the idiots and making them look even bigger idiots. Or of course taking normal people and making them look stupid Carpark Catchphrase stylee.

I think people tend to see Chris Moyles as someone who relies on his team, but they forget just how entertaining a DJ he was on his own before he joined Radio 1.

ya see being from up north I never had a chance to hear Chiltern or Capital at the time he was on, but from all sources it seems he was always good

I suppose its too much to ask that someone has some old tapes somewhere?

Ah yes, and Dianna Luke, Tim Shaw, Rebecca Franklin, Richard Tandy and Andy Nash. Scottie is back in the same building presenting on Magic now.

Technically he probably could, but god knows what he would talk about. We could rule out: politics, current affairs and sport for a start. Taking the piss out of callers for two hours may become very wearing.

There are a few old clips in the sound vault.

clublander wrote:Chris Moyles has been on Hallam FM too. They used him saying "the guys a genius" after he slagged off Nick @ Night. It went something like "back tonight.. from ten.. only on hallam fm...The guys a genius!"

Dunno how they got permission for it though.

Ahh, it was him then. I remember speculating that in my review ages ago. I wish I had heard that trailer.

Every time someone slags Nick off in an internet forum he seems to pop up to defend him self, so...

I *may* possibly have an attrocious copy of the trailer at home, recorded off FM, onto my phone dictaphone thingy. its awful, almost unlistenable, but ill have a look for ya n see if i can clean it up a bit
