This is very sad news.

I won't lie and say I listened to his show all the time, like people often do, because in reality I don't think I've ever heard more than 5 seconds of it, but still I know he was a real legend, and Radio 1 will never be able to replace him, I'm still very shocked.

Incidentally, why have they put Spoony on? Can Scott Mills not handle a situation like this, the last thing you want to listen too at such a sad time is Spoony!

Scott Mills is currently away because he has lost his voice. Spoony is filling in for one day only.

Sorry but I've heard the whole of Spoony's show and he's done a great job I think. He's far from the best DJ but credit to him because he's handling this situation really well.

very sad news.

Whilst other DJ's let their heads run by nostalgia, the 60+ John Peel always stood by the frontiers of musical progression. Realising that dried up music scenes went hand in hand with lack of national promotion for non-commercialised music.

A DJ who did so much more than than just jockey the discs.

and a nice bloke from the sound of those who knew him.

RIP

Andy Kershaws just been speaking about Peel and was saying how John was telling him he was finding it hard to work 11pm-1am and that he didn't feel too good.

The channel4 news coverage was good and positive untill the last 30seconds when he came out with this.

He said that 2 weeks ago John had told him he was unhappy radio1 had "marginalized" him and "pushed" him to the later slot, with the whole coverage ending quoting, "it's killing me"

He played such a wide ranging spectrum of music it's almost impossible not to like SOMETHING He'd played in any given show. Truly a crowd pleasing entertainer.

Only found out a couple of hours ago and just want to add my condolences really. Totally out of the blue and a very sad day for Radio 1 and music as a whole.

Although I've never listened regularly to his show, I felt genuinely sad when I heard the news. To see how influential and ground breaking he has been you just have to look at the list of bands and artists lining up to pay tribute to him today, all of whom he can claim to have helped "break". Says it all really.

RIP John Peel
