At the time when the show ended, there wasn't really a clear explanation for it. I'm sure most people on here had other people ask them and couldn't really explain it. I know a couple of things came up in rumour, namely:

- BBC was applying more censorship to the show. Some feature or other got dropped not long before the end was announced.
- Chris and Dave fell out. A newspaper reported that this was because of Chris' continued friendship with Dave's ex-wife.

And now we know that the Rajar figures were decreasing, so maybe they just wanted to get out while they were still on a high.

Now some time has passed, i was wondering if there was any confirmation as to the real reason why the show ended, or if we're still left with no real explanation?

Nope - I was pretty busy around the time that the show ended, so I haven't checked on here in a while. Did i miss some big revelation?

It was a combination of things but mainly it was down to the BBC trust telling Ben Cooper to lower the age of Radio 1 listeners.

Oh, I dunno what I'd merge it with. We've discussed this topic in so many different threads (Nick's shows, Dom and Dave, Chris and Jayne etc) that they've all just become a blur.

Andrew - if you really haven't worked it out yet, basically corporate decisions were made regarding the profile of the R1 audience and plans as to the style and content of the shows were made to lower this. I have no doubt that had he been willing to comply with the restrictions and regulation which was to be imposed on the Breakfast Show, Chris would have stayed but he was not so he didn't.

As for Chris and Dave falling out, personally I think it has a lot more to do with Chris pulling the earning rug out from under Dave by ending the show than it did Chris's friendship with Jayne. Dave would have been earning a lot less than Chris (although decent money I imagine), and hadn't really established anything else he could do to earn a crust (unlike the other team members), so when Chris ended the show he was left high and dry with an ex-wife and child and two households to support. No wonder he was bitter and resentful.

Unless Chris told Dave many months in advance that the show was ending I don't think that is the case. Their on-air chemistry was zero for a good while before the show ended and Dom had pretty much taken on Dave's role as the sidekick. And anyway, I seem to remember at the time them saying that it was only a recent decision to end the show.

Mebbe. I might be in denial about this because to be honest apart from Dave being maybe a little more than his usual grumpy-arse self I didn't really pick up on a massive breakdown between them. I probably I didn't hear enough of the show on a regular basis to have noticed.

I read Daves book and while I can't remember exactly what he wrote, I was sure he mentioned the fact that when he went freelance he knew of the consequences and that he couldn't rely on Chris and CMS forever. He knew it and he knew he had to figure out something in advance. So that would be a silly reason to fall out with Chris...

But I still think their friendship freezing up happened before that and it has nothing to do with Jayne. I liked the 'theory' about Dave being pissed that he wasn't included in the second album. But maybe that was a product of their falling out and not a cause.

Thanks for your responses - I *thought* the BBC changing what they wanted from Radio 1 was the cause, but wasn't sure. Somebody asked me why it ended a couple of weeks ago, and I realised I didn't actually know - the reason of "our time has come" didn't really explain it.

With the Chris and Dave thing, I noticed Dave posted a picture on twitter of the table set ready for people to come round, and on the same day Chris said he was leaving Twitter for a little while. I always read that as Chris not wanting to draw attention to the fact that he wasn't at Dave's dinner party. And also Dave didn't appear at any point during the Chris Moyles tour, as far as I know.

I'm amazed that people read that much into such small things. I'm not saying you're definitely wrong cos I don't know any more than you do, but it would never have occured to me for a second to think that based on their tweets.

Yes, im not going to deny id rather this had been solely Chris's choice and id rather a jigger about with time slots would have taken place instead but things end. Id rather Scott was still in the Go Home With Mills slot too but we move on.

Having recently finished the entire podcast range, and just for a reflection laugh gone back to the first breakfast show again, heh, he was a * shouty know it all in that first show. Pleased he toned down a bit in later years.
