I want to know whether Radio incoporates a watershed like in television. Like after 9pm at night, can the dj swear?. If it isnt, why isnt it. I didnt listen to Blue Jam but im sure that show wouldnt have been broadcast before 9 at night.

No there absaloutly no rules involved in radio at all, you can even broadcast live sex at 11am if you want to. But people do not do this because of there high sense of moral values and not wanting to offend and stuff... blah

At our uni radio station (ok is debateable whether that counts as a regulated radio station) :) but we were told quite frankly, that most things go after 9pm - though on Radio 1 specifically Tim Westwood still 'blanks' his naughties when he's on Saturday at 9pm....

There are no strict guidelines, it's basically up to the radio station themselves to decide what's acceptable and the public to complain to the feds :) Blue Jam wasn't *too* bad, since it went out at midnight - but once Radio 1 had to fade it down when that mischeivous Morris slipped in an edited version of the archbishop of canterbury's speech. Oops. Besides, Channel 4 did a tv version of Blue Jam which went out at about 11pm.

Mark and Lard say 'sh.t' on their show sometimes, there's the infamous Usher record and Tommy Boyd sometimes speaks about swearing on the air - he says theres only 1 1/2 words you cant say.

What about all those banded songs that you hear about but dont actually here for ages? Ok last post for today, I thought I would make more sense as the evening went on. Guess not!

There is one word that NO ONE can ever say in radio, and if you do in nearly every station it incorporates an instant dissmissal. It begins with a 'C' and has four letters in it and ends with 'T'.(C**t) And I think many stations hate the word shagging. Not sure about the 1/2 word.

Mark and Lard bleep the word * but i'm sure they just bleep and then 'nt' at the end because its a bit of a naughty word. James Whale says bollocks on nearly every show.......and has live sex on it.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh James Whale

all i can say is that "safe harbour" doesn't REALLY exist in america. the fcc can still fine you if you play obsceneties on the radio after 10 pm. which sucks.

Thought I'd add something since I joined after this thread died...

There is NO watershed in commercial radio. The Radio Authority works on a complaints basis, so if you accidently or otherwise play a track with a swearword in it at 3am and someone complains to the Radio Authority, they will still investigate and ask for the log tapes.

The BBC get away with it because they answer to themselves (or the Government). - jc

It's not really a case of the BBC aren't answerable to the Radio Authoirty, as they are. Every so often the BBC have to appeal to the government to keep them going (when they're 'up for review'). The Governement (in this case acting through the radio authorty) could award the current BBC frequencies to other people.

The BBC don't answer to themselves, its just they don't have SUCH the worry the commercial radio or ILR (Independant Local Radio) has got. The BBC will get a complaint and act on it to make sure it doesn't happen again, whereas ILR stations will endevour not to get the complaint in the first place.
