Early this afternoon when i got home from college, i turned on the tv, and saw this huge statue being pulled to the ground, and the people cheering; it brough a manly tear to my eye :)

To be fair to the americans, this time around, they are behaving respectfuly and my hat goes off to them

yeah except for the first bit there they draped a huge american flag over the head of the statue like they had conquered iraq, only to be ordered a few minutes later to change it to an old iraqi flag because it was their country not americas!

the berlin wall wasn't such a big thing if you ask me. the communist germany wasn't as brutal as saddam.

yeah but the berlin wall wasnt about simply the end of the german divide. it was a culmination of around 70 years of world history. it created a much safer world than anything this war has done. the berlin wall was a direct consequence of nazi germany and communist russia two regimes that make saddam look childs play...

i think it would be funny if bush and blairs next venture was to bring down the italian and russian maffia. i reckon they may be signing their own death warrants there!

bollocks do they. the amount of people saddam has killed is extremely high, the brutality he has inflicted on his people is the worst kind imaginable. the kind of things hitler and stalin did are directly comparable to what saddam has done, because it's exactly the same. the berlin wall may have been symbolic, but the liberation of iraq has actually freed millions of people from this oppresive nightmare.

hitler and stalin both affected the world globally saddam was never any true threat to anyone except his own people. im not going to compare atrocities because who can judge what is worse but if you think about it the war wouldnt be occuring without the formation of Israel which is a direct result of Nazi Germany.

you want to talk dictators there are many in africa currently and in various places around the world but they have no significant strategic importance (ahem maybe North Korea aside?). It is naive to think this war has done anything except liberate an opressed people (a worthy goal but where next?).

I think we should ban polotics and religeon from this board. It's asking for trouble.

The Anticipation and build up of that statue falling down was pretty good. When it finally fell and was left hanging, I burst out with a massive laugh.

the berlin wall didn't mark the end of either hitler or stalin.

it was also a direct result of the allies letting the russians have part of berlin. the berlin wall meant next to nothing except the fact that part of germany was communist. millions weren't killed in communist germany.

Yes, but I would still say the Berlin Wall being taken down was more of an occasion than them pulling down a statue, in my opinion.

yeah take part of germany please. the russians were also our allies in ww2 and had as significant if not more effect than the americans in winning it. east germany was an attempt to legitimise the communist methods and its failure signified the end of a period when the world was constantly at threat and the prospects of ww3 never far away.

you seem to thing by saying this i feel the iraqi war isnt significant which isnt true. the war is significant but must be taken in context.

the wall was only such a big thing because it was in europe. if it was in africa no one would give a *.

yes, by paying attention to the news you know exactly what is going on.

saddam may or may not be dead

the war is obviously still going. there are pockets of fights in bagdad and all over the country. there is a large area in the north still held by iraqi forces below the kurds and above bagdad, including saddams home town.
