The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

Hi, I'm a newbie so not sure if you've discussed this before although I did see the announcement thread and I was quite suprised by everybodies' sadness at them going.

Everyone I know and listens to Radio One hated them and I didn't know anyone who liked their show. We have Radio One on at work, but when they came on we used to switch over to cheesy local Radio just to get away from them.

When I listened to their show I used to chuckle very occasionally at a feature but then found myself screeming when they were still doing the same joke everyday for two months.

'Great Moments in Pop' was probably the worst! It was like listening to the Archers with 5 mins of shoddy northern accents and sound effects. I like listening to music and amusing chat and jokes, not story telling!

Someone please tell me why they were so good and kept winning Sony awards because I still can't figure it out!

Maybe but if someone can give me a decent reason to why they were good i will accept that. I just can't think of any!

Like I said, true they did have some funnyish things to say but they repeated them everyday!

Saying that I did like Lard's classic vinyl thing they did

I don't really understand why people some people don't get Mark and Lard. Yes they do the same jokes every day, that was why it was funny. Hardly the most intellectual or well thought out humour, but it worked and they have cult following, so they must have done something right.

Still don't understand how being repetitive is funny? It can work on TV like in Little Britain etc because the characters can be seen and the locations and theme can clearly change but doesn't work in Radio IMO

It wasn't just the same jokes every day though, they did vary slightly from day to day.

Maybe but the punchline was always the same, very predictable! kind of like when somebody tells you a joke you have heard before. I have never laughed when that happens to me, in fact I usually cut them short with the end and groan

But the element that you know what's coming makes it funny.

Don't understand your argument. So you're agreeing with me that the same everyday is crap? So why do you like M&L?

Can you seriously tell me that you liked "great moments in pop"? You actually enjoyed listening to 5 minutes of Archers style talking?

Still don't belive that knowing the punchline to a joke before it's told makes it funny. Kind of like watching Six Sense when you know Bruce Willis is the ghost.

They could have been funny because I can see their appeal but they needed to vary the show and let it run freely like Moyles'.

To me, running a feature that results in the same punchline for weeks on end is just lazy! They're are a million and one comical radio features they could have introduced week by week

To be honest, I enjoyed the Sixth Sence even though I knew Bruce Willis was dead. It wasn't very hard to it work out anyway.

Mark and Lard were brilliant, however it wasnt a show to have on in the background at work. If you were busy at the same time, Mark and Lard were not so good. And I suppose its the same with Moyles to a certain extent. However if your listening to the radio in your car or in your house with not much else going on, its great.

Just because you like Chris Moyles and he does a certain type of show shouldn't mean that another (pair of) dj's who choose to stick to another format are shit.

Now you may be a big fan of Moyles style show's, that are cloned to death on various time slots on Radio 1 but I frankly dear, couldn't give a damn.

Same drivel about '...We went out for a few drinks last night,' '...I watched the football last night,' 'I lanced my verrucca last night and severed a tendon in toe,'

'blah blah'

Boring mundane conversations about what they did which doesn't transcend to any worthwhile observational style humour.

I have my own life (just about) and to be fair I don't really give a fudge what colin murray did the other night unless it involved suicidal pensioners pissed on sherry.

I better bring this post back on tread before it goes all 'zoo' on me.

Mark and Lard are in their 40's and they don't pretend to be any younger than that unlike others on the station. This type of honesty appeals to a lot of people. You'll find more patronisation in voise of many other the 20 something presenters than you would with these pair of 40 year olds.

Alas, turning up to do do a show without any preperation and egotistically rant on about some dumbfounding event which happened to them for 15 minutes without any real punchline nor joke is something which mark and lard have always avoided. If you want to do a joke, script it, do it properly, keep it short. If it comes out shit, don't use it. If it comes out shit but sounds funny, use it.

As for using the same jokes, i suggest you should have paid more attention. In the many years they were on air, the overwhelming amount of sketches, catchphrases they used which they used in moderation in order to protect their shelf life was a sound to behold. On a regular basis, rotating skecthes and competitions and producing new ideas is a concept which would scare the shit out of many of the 20 something dj's that present on the station.

Producing a slick, original, humour filled package of goodness every weekday which stood head and shoulders above anything else on the station which was also shown in the radar listnership figures of two years ago when it was clearly procalaimed that mark and lard had the highest auidence figures on radio 1.

in the baron land of poncey young presenters, crap conversation and rubbish music, mark and lard stood as beacons ommiting rays of real humour, real personality, effort and quality music.

djsteveomac - I challenge you to find two scetches exactly the same. How did great moments in pop sound like the Archers? Just because it's acting on the radio doesn't make it the same. It wasn't my favourite of their features but at least it meant they got to play some decent music anyway.

I have to admit that when I used to go to school all day I didn't like Mark and Lard much either, it was only a couple of years ago I realised how funny and talented they are. I suppose they do exclude people with their style but you have to do that to make anything half decent. It’s not a time a lot of people listen to the radio so you might as well do something a bit different.

They had the highest audience share of any Radio 1 show and their ratings practically propped up everything else but I think it was probably best to leave on the top.

Other people must agree with you, however as they didn't go down well at all on breakfast.

I think M&L were an acquired taste. Years ago, I used to absolutely hate them and it always used to annoy me when I had to listen to them whilst waiting for Moyles to come on (much like it annoys me now when every saturday morning, having to get up at 6:00am becomes 10 times worse when my radio comes on only to play the incredibly uninspiring and depressing 'Blueroom' show, but that's a completely different topic.)

Over the years, I slowly seemed to appreciate their style of humour. I think the first feature that caught my eye (or ear) was the vague news - it was the first thing that I found genuinely funny. After that, more features gradually became funny to me. It's strange just how much of a contrast there was between what I thought of the show when I first heard it and what I thought of it towards the end.

The sad thing is, despite taking a liken to them, I never really did listen to them regularly (ie. daily) and, now that the show has ended, I'm beginning to regret it. It's very much a case of 'you don't miss it til it's gone'

I'll admit i was never keen on mark and lard a couple of years ago but after listening to them everyday when i started working at home i found them to be the most consistently funny show on Radio 1, sheer class.

Wish i'd have listened to them more now.

Doh!

Plus let's not forget how many band Mark & Lard showcased when other DJ's wouldn't touch them. Their work in that area was probably most important. I think they were cut short because of thier hatred of Fatman Scoop.

So books, radio and other forms of communicative medium can't utilise repitition in a funny way? Prick

I like listening to music and amusing chat and jokes, not story telling!

So theres no stories on the Chris Moyles show? Funny, because last time I heard that particular show, there was virtually one every link
you gusset.

Probably explains why you have a lack of friends you egocentrical buffoon.

Nice calculation dj. I'm sure, if they were gifted with your supernatural creative abilities they could match your features quota.

To sum up dj stevomac is either a radio messiah placed on earth to rejuvinate the radio industry or......is a clueless knob head.

Not exactly the same but near enough. I really liked when they did the skipping vinyl but hearing "Are they still available - not in that condition" everyday does get annoying.

I can understand people who say they were funny but I didn't listen everyday because you didn't experience just how repetitive they were!

They were just too old and they never really accepted the fact that music had moved on since the '70s.

Hey? That is exactly my point! They would love Stereophonics if the accepted it had moved on. They hate them because they are newer than the '70s
