An absolute legend of a broadcaster. Him and Alistair Cooke in the same year - such a shame.

John Peel OBE, legendary Radio 1 and Radio 4 presenter, has died suddenly on holiday in Peru.

It has been confirmed that John died from a heart attack last night - he leaves behind his wife Sheila and four children.

Radio 1 Controller Andy Parfitt said:

"John Peel was a broadcasting legend. I am deeply saddened by his death as are all who work at Radio 1."

"John's influence has towered over the development of popular music for nearly four decades and his contribution to modern music and music culture is immeasurable."

"Hopeful bands all over the world sent their demo tapes to John knowing that he really cared. His commitment and passion for new music only grew stronger over the years."

"In fact, when I last saw him he was engaged in a lively debate with his fellow DJs over the state of new music today. He will be hugely missed."

BBC Director of Radio & Music Jenny Abramsky added:

"John Peel was a unique broadcaster whose influence on Radio 1 could be felt from its very first days. He nurtured musicians and listeners alike introducing them to new sounds."

"His open minded approach to music was mirrored by his equally generous approach to his audience when he went to Radio 4 to present Home Truths."

"He had a remarkable rapport with all his listeners. Everyone at BBC Radio is devasted by the news. John is simply irreplaceable. Our hearts go out to Sheila and his children."

a broadcasting legend, a fantastic personality and an amazing inspiration to millions - he will be sadly missed

Twice we've had Teenage Kicks in the space of 30 mins on R1. Naturally sounds like its very hard for them to keep it together this afternoon.

Apart from supporting an awful football team the man did little wrong.

Drunken Glastonbury programmes will be my memory.

Radio 1 can be forgiven for every mistake they've ever made by playing Teenage Kicks after every news bulletin today - it sounds so appropriate as a mark of respect for such a valued member of the radio 1 community.

Yes I agree, playing teenage kicks after the news is something special. Such sad news, 65 is such a young age. RIP John. Thoughts are with the family.

I am not sure he would want Teenage Kicks to be played after every news, to be honest.

Even if you didn't listen to Peel, music would be a duller art without him. A ture legend. Rest in peace.

Is that who is drafted in when Peel would have been on? At least they haven't asked Zane Lowe to do overtime.

Before I say this I would like to note that I truly believe John Peel was the best thing for UK music since the invention of the radio. You may find posts on here from ages ago from when I said I didn't like him, but I think his was a show you had to get used to - I had only listened a few times back then, but I grew to love it and appreciate what he has done for music.

However - I do not believe all this rubbish about not being able to joke and be upbeat - one of the true merits of being British is being able to laugh in the face of sadness - this is why all over the UK people were telling their mates Ken Bigley jokes and Christopher Reeves jokes hours after they died - in other countries this would be interpreted as sick, but I think it's just one of the ways you can deal with it. So why shouldn't Spoony try and be upbeat about it? It does not mean that he isn't mourning inside.

Being openly sad and upset about something is, granted, another way to deal with a loss or an upsetting time, but it is certainly not a necessity under the circumstances.
