I have mentioned this before but it seems apt this week when most of our top 10 is made up of american drivel. Now I can accept crap records at number one (god knows for over 10 years we have had to) but at least before it seemed there was some British stuff mixed in.

Most of the records I own are by British bands (I must point out this is not a concious choice - its just what I like) but even stuff like Jamelia who I am not a fan of can't beat the American rubbish in the top 5. Usher, Destinys Child, Ja Rule... we have as good British versions.

Before anyone starts the charts not relevant blah blah blah music is part of our culture and its being eroded by this guff.

Going slightly off the 'Buy British' theme, but chart positions mean nothing these days. Out of all the new entries this week, the three that I would have bought (I don't buy singles anymore-just albums) came in at 27, 54 and 61. Where they come in the chart doesn't neccesarily make it a better or worse record then something higher or lower.

just a matter of opinion -
basically, if s club 7 8 9 10 or busted released a single, it'd go top 3 easy.
take dizzee rascal, or the zutons.
both of those are 'specialist music', way better than busted, but will struggle to make the top 20 unless it has a slight appeal to screaming teenage girls ;D

Well techincially no, as what makes a good record is indivudual taste. However, the record that sells the most is obviously thought by most of the people who purchase records to be the best one out of the charts.

The majority of people must not think they are 'way better' though. More people buy Busted than the Zutons -> Busted are more popular -> More people think Busted are 'way better' than the Zutons

I think its partly that and partly who buys the singles.

For example:

Busted > teenage girls > buy everything they can that is Busted related >always buys the singles

The Zutons > generally males > not bothered about buying everything Zuton related > might think 'I'll wait for the album'

Definitely. I think, as a rule of thumb, most adults will wait for the album rather than buy singles. I for one prefer to hear a few singles before deciding weather it's worth purchasing the album.
The singles chart has been reduced to a measure of the number of 12 year old fans a boy band has.

My point wasn't about bad records at number 1 - i have come to accept that. My point is that the bad records these days are american rather than home grown dross.

Well technically yes, as that kind of proves that chart positions count for nothing as they're just a popularity contest - and like I said - 'the three I would have bought' didn't particularly get high in the charts but to me, they were the best releases that week.

If you have a look at 10 years ago this month, The only record I bought was Suede - The Wild Ones. To me it has stood the test of time, It's noted as one of Suede's finest and to me was a better record then 'Baby D - Let Me Be Your Fantasy' which was a better selling single, but a greater number of other people did and may still now think differently. That's what chart's are essentially about, popularity, so that's why they should be disregarded.

They shouldn't be disregarded because when it comes down to it, they represent the popular opinion of the buyers. More people think the number 1 is worth buying than the others that week. It's a pretty good representation of what people think is good enough to buy.

My arse.

Eric Prydz got to number one by selling 22,000 copies. Boogie Pimps got to Number One by selling 35,000 copies.

It's not at all representation of music fans just by the low numbers - roughly around 1/3000 of the population with Eric Prydz. The Singles Chart counts for nothing these days, as it's all down to a good marketing strategy, loads of publicity and exposure, getting playlisted on radio weeks before the song is released and appearing in crappy magazines like Smash Hits and TOTP, so they can develop some sort of fanbase. Most people don't buy into that, hence low sales and the reason why the singles chart should be disregarded.

Just read what I write. Im talking about it representing the people who are actually **buying** records. You cannot include music fans who aren't buying records in a chart based on sales.

Figures on low sales prove nothing. If anything they just prove that the other songs that ranked lower in the charts sold even less.

Eric Prydz at number one means more people liked his song enough to buy it that week, more than the people who liked the other songs released at the same time. That's what the charts shows.

McQueen, I honestly am reading what you write, but ask yourself why sales are so low. It's because more and more people are buying albums instead, groups such as ABC1 males over 35 with a dispensable income and fans of alternative/indie music - a usual trend as live music is also popular, hence the entire album, more and more people are downloading singles, legal or illegal (coming near to one million downloads a month), and due to the amount of airplay some songs get, sometimes months before the release, they no longer feel the need to buy the song, due to overplay- just look at the amount of music radio and television stations out there now, covering all genres of music - even those jukebox like ones where you can text in or phone for a request that show. All these people who find other ways of listening to music do count, cause 10 years ago, these people woulfd have been buying singles. Music is so widely available now, the chart is not representative of all the people now, just people with more money than sense (although not enough to buy an album) who buy a single a week for £1.99 with their pocket money after coming home from school at 3.00-This is the singles market - Kids. Just look how the target age range has shifted on TOTP in the last 20 years.
