yup you get to sit on the amazing art work they have on the roundabouts in the attempt to hide the fact its a sh*thole.

If you're going to have it on a roundabout I see no option but moving it to MK - we have loads of them, so there could be an overflow on to the next ones (if it was needed.)

topher do you know nothing? skelmersdale was a new town like milton keynes and was designed in the same way (without the sophistication or style) with loads of roundabouts. skem is for scouse rejects in the same way milton keynes is for * rejects.

When I lived in the States, I was asked at least five times the question "You come from England in London right?"
By the fifth time I was just answering yes.

Well, Los Angeles is more populous than Jamestown, it doesn't mean it was founded first.
But London might have come before York as it was probably a roman settlement.

but York was a Viking settlement, called Yorvik

The Romans were here in and around the 1st century. The vikings only ruled the country for a short time around the 10th or 11th century, but they could have had settlements here earlier than that.

York existed before the Vikings invaded, Jorvik was simply the Viking name for it. The Roman name for York was Eboracum, which was founded in 71AD and was one of the leading cities in the Roman Empire.

York was recaptured by the Anglo-Saxons under the command of King Arthur during the 5th century, who renamed it Eoforwic. King Edwin built the first Cathedral in York, which is now known as York Minster. Many of Edwin's subjects were baptised in the wooden church on Easter Day in 627.

The Anglo-Saxon rule of York ended on the 1st November 866 when it was over-run by Vikings commanded by Ivar the Boneless. The Vikings called the city Jorvik and used it as a trade port.

The Vikings were run out of York in 954 by King Eadred, who united Northumbria with the rest of England. Between the years of 1056 and 1066 York changed hands several times because of local rebellion and Norwegian invasion, but Harold II finally defeated the Norwegians in the Battle of Stamford Bridge. Harold II was defeated 3 weeks later by William the Conqueror at Hastings.

William tried to subdue Northern rebellion in 1069 by building 2 wooden castles on top of great earth mounds. Although the castles are long gone, the mounds can still be seen.

That's pretty much a brief history of York. All from the top of my head you understand...

By about AD 200, the administration of Britain was divided in two. York became the capital of Britannia Inferior & London of Britannia Superior. Around the same time the city also acquired its famous walls (probably about 20ft high). This protective measure may have been due to Civil War, initiated when Governor Clodius Albinus tried to claim the Imperial Crown in Rome.
