Hi!

Does anyone know how to get a job on the Chris Moyles show?

I've been listening for the last few months and I think he's such a laugh! I have a similar personality and a mad sense of humour and would fit in well alongside Chris and Dave.

It would be my ideal job as they seem to have a great time on air and only have to work for 15 hours a week!

Are there any auditions you need to go to? I really need to know because I think me and Chris will make a great team!

Hiya Katie,

You could always ask Aled who actually works on the show.

Your first step would be to get an actual job at Radio One and then you can the hopefully work with Chris Moyles.

I think your job working on a show would include a few more hours than 15 hours a week.

There aren't auditions as such, but you can apply for work experience if you are interested in working at the BBC or Radio One.

Visit the BBC Work Experience site

Im sure Aled would like seeing that quote about only working 15 hours a week. Mixing jingles/researching isnt done during the show.

Clearly you can see that this would be a great op. to mock the newbie - but to be honest, people don't come here for that. Its not encouraged anyway. Lewis - why not just be nice and answer the questions the new member asked?

Obviously KatieSilver is fairly young (im guessing she is) and its a perfectly sensible question to ask.

It's not Pop Idol...

Then again reality TV nowadays, anything is possible, "Moyles team member Idol" could be on 5ive in the future..

Despite the fact that it does sound like the Chris Moyles show is an entity on it's own it's not. You don't get to apply to work on the Chris Moyles show you apply to work at Radio 1.

I have worked on The Roadshows, One Big Sundays, Top 40, Dave Pearce and Scott Mills before they put me on Moyles. So it would be damn near impossible to come in to Radio 1 purely to work on his show. You'd have to be VERY creative and determined to work around the Radio 1 maze of politics just to work on the show.

You also don't apply to be on air. The only person who gets to do that at radio 1 are the presenters. Chris Moyles came to be on air and that's it. Dave worked at Radio 1 as a BA and is now empolyed as a writer (and a very good one at that). Rachel and I are Producer at Radio 1 (although I am a BA on Chris show).

We all (bar Chris) are to work 40 hour weeks. I actually work closer to 50.

Top tip. Don't ever apply to Radio 1 whether for a job or for Work Experience saying you want to be on air or be with Chris Moyles because they won't like it. I am completely happy and prepared to work at Radio 1 off air (despite what Chris says). If I get moved to another show I'll have to be. If I want to be in the spotlight I have to go and look for it elsewhere because you won't get it at radio 1.

It kind of sickens me that some people like Katie think that it is that easy to ‘get in’.

I’m not sure what Aled’s history is before Radio 1, but I’m sure it’s similar to my current situation.

I started at a hospital radio station, not my local one as they bizarrely turned me down. It wasn’t the greatest of times, especially the request collecting and standing outside Marks and Spencers with a charity tin, setting off the automatic doors (never again!) but it was a ‘good learning experience’.

I then applied to work experience at my local station on the back of the experience I had built up and I had a few months there until a change of management and work experience policy meant my time there came to an abrupt end.

I then got involved with a community radio station in South Wales when I was away at College studying an HNC in Sound Production. I produced a show for a year and did a bit of presenting. After I finished the course, I applied for work experience at stations in the South East., I got two placements from about twenty letters, many rejection letters but more often then not, no response. Eventually after building my work experience and contacts I got some luck and swindled some freelance cover work as a technical operator at one station, the odd voiceover work for another radio group and doing weekend Traffic and Travel news for a well known organisation in London.

The hours are long and unpredictable, pay is not much but I’m glad because now I have built up my CV, I’m now getting to the shortlist interview stage when I apply for full time jobs as a technical operator or broadcast assistant.

I wish it was as simple as turning up for an audition, but it’s not.

Student Radio is possibly better than Hosp. Radio.

Who wants to be broadcasting to people that are ill. If you have a local university nearby, contact them

...how can they refuse! Its blatently obvious that Chris needs someone like you to make him successfull given your lack of broadcast experience and accurate knowledge of the industry.

I have a degree in media yet that alone doesn't get you a job in broadcasting. Johnny 'sugar coated' Hoare has a media degree, and a journalism qualification, yet still he can not get a job in the industry.

If your truely commited, you must follow the lead of hercule who sacrificed his time, money and social life to gain valuble, unpaid experience.

ad- hospital radio is more of a training ground to learn technical skills.

The Sugar Coated One speaks....

Forget it Katie, you're more likeley to get a job if you hang around your local Todays Best mix Cretin FM 107. Make tea offer serevices for free, answer phones and keep plugging em with demos. Offer yourself to em and do hospital radio. The Ho is currently making a format within Hosptial Radio plymouth which is news based and at the moment is excedding my expectations!!

good luck- you need it the media is highly competitive world.

My tip start small aim big!

Here is Lizzie's advice on becoming a BA:

Lizzie wrote:What exactly does your job involve/take us through a typical working day?
The team includes myself, Chris, Comedy Dave and Producer Will. Day-to-day jobs vary with the content of that day's show. Each morning it is my job to clear out the 'show box' from the previous day and do general administration work. The box is then repacked with scripts, records, stories from the papers, DATs and mini discs, and anything else Chris needs for that day in the studio. I'm also responsible for organising contestants for show features. The contestants are always prepared before we go to the studio, as things get pretty manic once we are on air.

Between 3pm and 5.45pm I answer phones, make tea, and have a right giggle with my boys! Occasionally we may go out for a quick pint after the show.

How did you get this job and what experience did you have?
I took Media Studies at university, and one day I turned up to a Radio Broadcasting class by mistake. I enjoyed the subject so much I ended up majoring in it. I started at Radio 1 as a work experience girl on the Simon Mayo Show, while I was in my final year at university. I would help Jude send out prizes, and generally get in her way!

This lead to me becoming a freelance BA, which meant I would cover on shows when BAs were ill, on holiday or skiving. I then worked full time with Jamie Theakston, Emma B, Dave Pearce and the One World Show.

Although I studied radio at university, I had little knowledge or experience working in live radio, so I have developed a lot of my 'broadcasting skills' thanks to Radio 1.

What skills are most important to you in your job?
At the moment the boys are on a fitness drive, which I have been roped into. Twice a week our instructor, Gym Lady Jane takes us out running for an hour. So I would say finding the motivation to go running around a park on a freezing cold morning is quite important at the moment. I am running out of excuses to stay in the office!

What are your plans for the future?

I only began working on the Chris Moyles show fairly recently, so I am very happy here for the time being. Eventually I would like to be a producer... and perhaps marry a millionaire and own a small Caribbean island!

What are the best things about your job?
Unlike some of my mates I actually look forward to coming to work, so I am very lucky in that respect. I cannot pinpoint one particular thing as being the best thing about my job. The people I work with are classic, and I enjoy the challenge of working on a live broadcast each day. Plus last summer I was lucky enough to work on a number of outside broadcasts around the country and abroad.

What are the worst things?
Running around cold parks at 9.30 in the morning!

What has been your scariest moment working in radio?
When I was in Ayia Napa with Radio 1. One World and Dance Anthems producer Paul Thomas tried to get me to go on this Reverse Bungee thing! I find the idea of being catapulted into the air quite scary!

Do you ever get nervous meeting the stars?
Not unless I fancy them!

What advice do you have for people wanting to get into radio?
Contact your local radio stations to see if they have any work experience available.

Good to know, thanks!
