'Snoopers' charter' becomes law

The 'snoopers' charter' that will see every phone call made, website visited and email sent monitored by the government officially became law on Thursday.

Despite claims from legal authorities that the Order contravenes the European Convention on human rights, the Order will now oblige all communication service providers to keep records of who their customers phoned, where from, who and when they emailed and what websites they visited for 12 months.

Scary.

Discuss.

As if they'll monitor everything. They can gladly monitor my communications, they'd probably die of boredom. Will serve the * right.

Does that mean when I stump up £20 to the cab driver on the way home it goes towards this bollocks?

As far as I am concerned I thought your ISP had to keep records of emails sent and web pages visited for seven years by law anyway, but I could be wrong.

There will be underground ways of avoiding it anyway and people will be tempted to go for them.

I dont know about emails, but I dont think ISPS keep a copy of websites visited. Someone I spoke to who works for an ISP said *they* dont keep copies of URLS visited.

The first post is right. Do a search on it and theres more details.

It been implemented is a different thing though. ISPs don't want to pay what it will cost to do and government only are providing a small amount so it'll be a while before it comes into practice. ISPs don't want to protest against it either as they want to be seen as making the interent safer, but there are problem as it goes against some privacy things.

Ut's not that bigger deal yet anyway, if it's only a log of what you've been on, it's not as if they trawl through everyones log or someone is sat watching what you are seeing, it's just there incase it's ever needed.

the government can say they can do this but realistically it can not be possible

the threat is often more powerful than the actions themselves i think

Realistically it is possible.

No it is possible. Clearly there are things you are not aware of. GCHQ currently do something similar on a military scale.
