Triggered by the best advertof 2003 thread...

What does everybody think to the new style of advertising Playstation 2 are using? Is it just silly, or weirdly surreal? And what of the the slogan, 'fun, anyone?'

i think it is a poorly phrased question. if you were ever going to buy a playstation 2 you wouldnt need advertising now.

Yeah, but out of sight, out of mind - with Christmas coming up it may remind people what they want for Christmas/ to buy with their Christmas money. I bet that's the theory anyway.

i dunno, made no sense, but i have no idea how the sharing the laugh has anything to do with PS2. mabye that you will have fun with your brand new PS2.

You cretin! Many people will but playstation 2's due to this advertising campaign because of the time of year, increase in spending (primarily impulse buying) and the rise in sales of brown electrical goods equates to thrifty marketplace which companies like sony need to perform well in.

saying that, whilst the advert is entertaining it fails to highlight a unique selling point of a playstation 2 which sets itself apart from it's competitors.

as a local advertising mogul who has conneda great sum of money off local business', i've become very familiar with the creation of shit ad campaigns before anybody starts.

unique selling points are very rare nowadays anyway. i believe that if it was studied there would be little effect on sales of PS2s as a result of this campaign. the brand is well known already.

Yes but you do not need to have a unique selling point to market a product - you need to be good at marketing (in other words be able to convince people that you have a unique selling point without falling foul of the ASA.)

As Stevo said, the PS2 ad doesn't do this really, but it sticks in your mind, which in itself is a good thing.

Just because a product is well known, doesn't mean you stop telling people about it - that would be complacent and lazy. It might be a completely different market to the gaming one, but you don't see FMCG products like Coke and Persil stop advertising just because people know about them.

The old adage 'Any publicity is good publicity' works. No matter how crap the advert it gets PS2 in the public eye - compare that to Nintendo who don't bother, so no one bothers buying a Nintendo and it proves it.

Is it just me who has been seeing the "Gamecube, now only £79.99 woooohooo" and "Mario Kart: Double Dash" adverts then.

I like the new PS2 adverts they catch your attention because they have a unique style. I already have a PS2 but I'm sure this ad campaign will work.

Yes but with your advertising knowledge you should appreciate that people do not need a PS2 every week unlike persil or coke... once you have one you are unlikely to buy more. Unless you are some PS2 hoarding freak.

So why do car companies spend millions of pounds on regular advertisments and airtime when a vehicle is not something you would buy every week?

Sony are not just flogging a games console, but getting people to invest in their franchise and increase brand loyalty. When the ps3 comes out, sony will rely on current ps2 owners to purchase product. Not everyone owns a playstation, therefore a market is there.

A definition of a unique selling point is broad. It could be something like 'wheelchair access in all our stores' to 'we sell x product cheaper than our rivals'.

They've released a silver one, which is more than just a PS2 with a different case. Sony have made some adjustments to the PS2 so the PS2 silver is quieter, and features a built in IR port, things like that. It also looks dead cool, and comes with 2 pads instead of one.

my point was that if you had a ps2 you are unlikely to buy another. also if you own a new ford focus you wouldnt buy the same car again. pillock.

if the product is changed e.g. the ps1 to the ps2 it isnt really the same product. its like bread and fruited teacakes.

Yeah, but you might have a 2 year old Ford Focus that you wish to replace. You can't really compare consoles with cars because people don't generally need to replace them.

but its basically the same, does the same job.i have a normal black one, im not gonna buy a new silver one just coz its quieter and looks cool. it does the same basic thing.

Also a car is quite often an essential in the cases of a lot of people, whereas people like Sony rely on your disposable income.

you replace cars just as you replace consoles as you generally update to feel greater benefits. sales of new cars depends a lot on disposable income also.

But you're more likely to replace a car even if the model hasn't changed.
