BBC DJs at war as the belcher is stung by the blarney

SOME might say they’ve both got ideas above their stations. But two of BBC Radio’s top presenters went to war with one another yesterday. On Radio 2, there was Terry Wogan, jovial Irishman and broadcaster of the old school. Over on Radio 1 was motor mouth shock-jock Chris Moyles, renowned for his bad manners – including belching on air and near-the-knuckle style.
And the airwaves were crackling with their apparent contempt for each other. Moyles used his second day in charge of the Radio 1 Breakfast Show to attack his more experienced ridiculing him for allegedly wearing a wig.
The 29-year-old Leeds-Born DJ hit out after learning that 65-year old Wogan had twice used his own morning programmed to berate TV adverts for Moyles’s new show. The ads, screened on BBC1, depict Moyles as a Binman, picking his nose and at one point throwing a bike over the wall.
Wogan, who in the past has attacked Moyles and predecessor Sara Cox for being ‘tasteless’, told his listeners on Monday: ‘In no time at all, Moyles will have two to three hundred listeners and the advertising campaign will look like money well spent. ‘I’ve seen that ad for Radio 1, he’s a refuse disposal operative (laughing) throwing bicycles over the wall and in the final shot he’s picking his nose. What is that telling people about Radio 1?’
He continued by taking a wipe at the DJs creativity, saying: He’s an engaging fellow, old Moylsie. He’s got a BBC1 advertising campaign and 14 scriptwriters on his show.’ Yesterday, Wogan read a listener’s letter about Moyles’s ad, which said the public would have no idea who the DJ was. It also claimed people might think it was an advertisement for car in the community. But a furious Moyles quickly hit back. While his sidekick ‘Comedy Dave’ refereed to Wogan as ‘obsessed’ and mocked his Irish accent, the DJ Ridiculed Wogan’s alleged use of a toupee.
‘For nose-pickers everywhere dustmen of the UK, anybody who’s ever thrown away rubbish this is the station for you,’ he said. ‘Plus I have my own hair.’ However, Moyles was clearly stung by Wogan’s comments, adding: ‘ The war has begun, the battle of breakfast has commenced.’ Within his first two days on the flagship Breakfast Show, Moyles has also taken swipes at Chris Evans, Sara Cox and another former Radio 1 DJ Zoe Ball.
Wogan’s weekly rating recently hit at all-time high of 7.9million, while Moyles’s inherited figures from Sara Cox have dipped below six million. It is not the first time has been at odds with less experienced broadcasters. In 2001, he suggested that Radio 1 – where he once worked – had lost its way and had nothing to offer intelligent youngsters.
