Hi,

I'd like to start up a website for my local ATC Squadron and was wondering if any of you could help?

What would be the best program to use?
Where I should buy a domain name?
What about website space & hosting etc?
How much is it going to cost?
Anything else?

Thanks,

Adam.

- Notepad.
- Go Daddy or search google for register domain name.
- Depends what you want. Only you know how much space you need. Search around for a plan that suits your need.
- Depends what plan you buy and from where, there isn't a set rate. Search.
- Post on a website that specialises in this type of question.

Thanks.

Whats the point - when there are people here with websites already?

Because a website that specialises in that type of question will mostly likely already have the answers to your questions, and if not will probably help you out more. That is why they are there.

You need a basic knowledge of what you need at least. Searching would give you a general idea. You can't expect others to give you everything on a plate so search and get some knowledge for yourself.

Fair enough, Mcqueen. I just wanted to get some advice here. I'll start to search when I have a bit more time. :)

Thanks.

I'd suggest the best package for creating an effective (And not cheap/tacky looking) website would be Macromedia Dream weaver and is probably the most common industry standard program to use (along with more interactive web design packages such as fireworks, Flash/shockwave etc). The draw back is that the program is v.expensive but if you do the right searching you can find it on the net but I won't actually say that's the right thing to do.

Another thing to do is actually really think about what you want on your site and plan it all out (what'll go on each page - what's linke to what etc) and then spend ages.....and I mean ages, getting used to the web editor you choose to use. Both the web sites I have designed took me absolutely ages once I'd done all the artwork etc and they are both small sites.

You can check one out that I did for my Church's youth group, using Dreamweaver at:

http://www.123reg.co.uk/ - flexible for domains.

Cheers. Both good websites! And as Eddie is here, I think he registered with 123. Maybe i'm wrong but he's asked similar questions.

Nice website, Eddie.

Gald to help Adam. I am by no means an expert but if you really try you cna get a nice site. I advice, but you may not have the facilities, to design your own site elements (buttons, logos etc.) if you can rather than using bog standard buttons as your site will look un original and boring. Good luck

I should have no problems in getting together the facilities to design things for the website - its just a big task of putting it all together and getting it on to the internet. Thanks for the advice.

Yeah I use 123-reg for all my domains. Very good. You can also switch name servers easily or the more simple option of using their web based interface for redirecting all addresses etc, which is still very good.

Textpad and 15MB of space on the uni server suits my needs, but I don't claim to be an expert web developer.

Pop up hell there.

Still its good pratices if you only want to something simple and not spend loads of cash.

Web hosts - I would go for something local, then if anything goes wrong you can go round there and find out what's going on, which is less hassle than dealing over the phone. Careful for anything which claims to be UK based but deals in dollars too. I would go for 20% more discspace than you estimate you need, in case you realise you need extra.

yes thats what i meant. mine is free and its ok for its purpose (crappy football team website) but the downside is definatley all the pop-ups. makes you want to cry (sometimes)

If you insist on free web space use an ISPs, as it is unlikely to have any adds or bandwidth limits.
