I think why The Darkness are recieving negative posts is becuase they are now the archetypal 'mainstram band'. At first they sound different, it's okay to like them. They have deserved sucess at first, recieve rave reviews in the music press, more and more people become aware of them and they become popular. Then they make the crossover into mainstream, ignore where they came from, make the classic mistake of believing in their own hype and doing bits and pieces in Heat Magazine and All New Top of The Pops, Richard and Judy take up on them, the Kids buy thier albums and singles on release date, then other 'popstars' like Liberty X, The Sugababes and Mis-Take, start to say they're fantastic.
I'll have a bet with anyone, that if and when The Darkness release a second album, it'll get critical acclaim from all those people above, when in truth the music press and people who know their music will regard it as - a bit rubbish....
But the 'circling eagles/bandwagon/flies' effect happens to all popular bands. It depends how you largely avoid the mainstream. You could release a change in direction, perhaps non commercial album, bust still be good, perhaps better musically (Radiohead, Blur), or you can dissapear for four and a half years and make a comeback once the eagles have swooped on someone else (Stone Roses).
It will interesting what happens with Coldplay with thier next album...
