Sara Cox will be replaced by Scott Mills when the DJ goes on maternity leave, Radio 1 has announced.

Cox, who is married to club DJ Jon Carter, has booked time off at the end of May to have the couple's first baby.

Southampton-born Mills, 29, will swap his weekend afternoon slot for drivetime when Cox is away.

The shake-up comes after Radio 1 decided to move Mark and Lard off the schedule to make way for new talent.

Cox was moved to drivetime after being axed last year from Radio 1's Breakfast Show to make way for Chris Moyles.

Mark and Lard will air their final show on March 26, and as expected they will be replaced by Colin and Edith.

Vernon Kay will take over Colin and Edith's weekend slot.

The Breakfast Show's Comedy Dave will team up with Mark "Chappers" Chapman to present a weekend show covering the sporting action during the summer season.

A Radio 1 spokesman said: "These changes have come about as a result of Mark and Lard leaving the network and Sara Cox going on maternity leave. This has allowed us to bring some fresh young talent to daytime on Radio 1 in the weekdays and expand the roles of some newer talent at the weekend."

Kay said: "I've only been on the station for a couple of months so I am pretty chuffed that they have agreed to give me a bigger slice of the Radio 1 pie. I promise to be careful with it."

Interesting about the Comedy Dave and Chappers thing... I thought they worked well when they did the Comic Relief thing a while back, so it should be a good thing (if to be believed). Mind you, I've always thought that there was scope for a sport type show on Saturdays. This summer should be great, what with the Olympics, Euro 2004, plus the usual Wimbledon, etc etc etc.

Most people were right. Vernon taking over Colin and Edith IMO is rubbish. He doesn't sound right on the radio. Dave & Cahhpers' sport show should be good. I think the sport show will be in Vernon's old slot of 3-4 on Sunday's gdbarker.

Yeah, Dave's and Chappers' Sports show could work both ways - on Saturday as a preview of the weekend's "sporting action" (pop-a-doodle-doo), or on a Sunday as a weekend roundup/review. Would definitely be something a bit different, and would be good to listen to before/after a match or whatever.
