I think it's pointless coding one yourself when others are around that are suitable or can be easily edited.

Movable type is Perl. I'd prefer to use php though and it be dynamic like Wordpress, (but that lacks the adavanced features and flexibility that movabletype has).

Fair enough. I prefer to do stuff off my own back so I can say that it's my own creation.

It's a good plan. I normally find that debugging code that you havn't written is a nightmare. If you write your own code, you know how it works, so you know how to fix it.

Well obviously I wouldn't attempt to write anything like that, at least not if you don't have a couple of years to spare. I was just commenting that writing your own code is often a good idea.

I don't have use for a blogger anyway, I'm taking ages on a CMS for my web site at the moment though, my first proper venture outside std HTML.

Can't really cos my web space isn't mine if you see what I mean - I admin it for the table tennis league, they pay for it.

When I get money sorted out I may do a personal web site. If I put a blog on it though, I'm not making it known to any of my mates.
