BBC Radio 1 plans radical changes to evening line-up

Jules Grant, Brand Republic 10:45 18-05-2004
LONDON – The BBC is planning a radical overhaul of Radio 1's evening schedule, which includes well- known music specialist presenters such as Pete Tong, John Peel and Zane Lowe, as the station aims for a wider audience.

The changes, instigated by Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt, are set to be announced later this week and it is thought that at least three of the current night-time presenters will go.

As well as those already mentioned other late night session DJs include Tim Westwood, Judge Jules, Steve Lamacq, Fabio & Grooverider, Seb Fontaine, Trevor Nelson and Gilles Peterson.

BBC veteran Peel is thought to be safe as is recent hire Lowe, who has had his station hours doubled to 12 a week. Lowe who is also an MTV2 presenter, moved across from alternative music station Xfm earlier this year and his ability to embrace a broad range of musical tastes from rock to hip-hop is seen in his credit.

According to reports, Parfitt said that there were no plans for a more mainstream feel and that the station was still committed to delivering cutting edge music, but he told The Independent, "we can't just preach to the converted".

Plans are underway to try to broadcast more music popular with the station's key 15-24 year old target audience and encourage new talent.

Radio 1 recently restructured its daytime schedule, dropping presenters including Mark Goodier and Mark & Lard. Sara Cox was also moved from breakfast to make way for Chris Moyles, who delivered an extra 400,000 listeners in the latest set of Rajar figures.

And perhaps a better write up of exactly the same story from MediaGuardian:

Radio 1 to overhaul evening line-up

John Plunkett
Tuesday May 18, 2004

Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt is planning a shake-up of the station's evening schedule aimed at broadening the appeal of specialist shows hosted by veteran John Peel and Gilles Peterson.
Mr Parfitt, who has just overhauled Radio 1's daytime line-up, aims to get the specialist music out to a wider base.

While its daytime line-up is dominated by mainstream acts including Jo Whiley, Sara Cox, and new breakfast DJ Chris Moyles, Radio 1's evening roster has been traditionally dominated by less inclusive acts like Peterson, Pete Tong, Tim Westwood and the 65-year-old Peel.

"All of those shows appeal to particular musical communities, I'm really pleased that they have credibility within these specific communities, but I think the job of Radio 1 - given that we are a national broadcaster - is that we can't just preach to the converted," said Mr Parfitt.

"What I'm talking about is trying to arrange the universe of Radio 1 specialists in such a way that it matches people's lifestyles and moods. Frankly, there will always be some compromises because there are a limited number of slots and everyone would like more time," he told the Independent.

At least three of the station's late-night DJs are expected to be affected, but Mr Parfitt insisted the evening roster would not lose its cutting edge.

Shows of similar genre will be grouped together and Zane Lowe, poached from London station Xfm last year, is set to have his hours on air doubled to 12 a week.

Radio 1's evening line-up also includes Judge Jules, Seb Fontaine, Steve Lamacq, Trevor Nelson, and Fabio and Grooverider.

"We are not here to dilute what any of the specialists do and make them more accessible. Our commitment to delivering at the cutting edge for all of these genres is absolute," Mr Parfitt added.

After a year of decline, Radio 1's listening figures bounced back at the beginning of the year. Its reach increased 4.3% on the previous quarter to 9.85 million, but it was still nearly 5% down on the same period last year.

It was helped by Moyles, who added an extra 400,000 listeners at breakfast. However, the station failed to win any of the top prizes at last week's Sony Radio Awards.

Radio 1's weekday schedule has undergone a quiet revolution in recent months, although only Mark Radcliffe and his sidekick Marc Lard have left the station. Moyles swapped slots with Cox, who now presents the drivetime slot.

It was 400,000 in the 15-24 group and 700,000 overall Or it was something to do with DAB radio but I'm not sure.

She's still working for Radio 1 by the looks of things. Her show sounds good actually. Love her voice. Vicky Marsden is good as well, shame I'm in bed. She should be on at a better time.

I thought the 400,000 was Radio1's overall total gain since last year.

Newsbeat just announced it... Zane Lowe is going four night's a week, and will start at 7. They'll be a few more DJ's as well, especially some dance ones. They'll have the full story at 12:45.

Oh, and the "drivetime" slot moves back to 4pm and now ends at 7pm. That means no more daily Dave Pearce. Thank fudge for that.

Wonder what the new "Experimental" slots will end up sounding like... or how long they'll last. - jc

Echo that, if anything Hobbs should be on earlier, if I'm starting work early there's no way I'm gonna be up till 3am to listen to it.

Wow, these are big changes.

Zane seems to be quite popular so that's a good move. I doubt Dave Pearce will be too happy going from 5 shows a week to 1 though. I'm glad they are keeping Lamacq Live on a Monday after Zane, and I've also noticed that the R'nB chart on a Saturday is being brought back an hour to 4pm, and then goes on till 7, with Trevor Nelson given that prime time Wednesday slot of 1-3am instead of his Sunday night show...bet he's delighted.

Also, if Coxy does come back to replace Scott Mills when she's dropped her sprog, I can't see where on earth he's going to fit into the schedule. Maybe she's not planning on coming back?

Am I right in assuming Vicky Marsden/Seb Fontaine have been dropped from Radio 1 altogether?

What a pity.

I'd far rather listen to Vicky's dulcit tones when coming in early in the morning or guiding me through than an essay crisis, than some experimental s*** show.

I don't like the fact that Colin & Edith get an extra hour, or that Vicky Marsden has gone. Also, I think the Rock Show should have been moved earlier, instead of the rubbish Lock Up, and should get a new presenter, Mary Anne Hobbs' voice annoys the hell out of me, she gasps before everything she says.

Seems more tame than I thought; Dave Pearce, Vicky Marsden and Seb Fontaine seem to have never been particularly popular. I think it's a good idea having Colin and Edith between 3 and 4 now because they are kiddie friendly (unlike Mark and Lard), but could they not now re-introduce Mayo's old show and give it to Mills rather than giving C+E three hours? e.g. :
7:00 to 10:00 Moyles
10:00 to 12:00 Mills
12:00 to 14:00 Whiley
14:00 to 16:00 C+E
16:00 to 19:00 Cox (when she is back)

The 'Experimental' shows sound intriguing, it’s a good time to try things out. Steve Lamacq is clearly on his way out now.

All in all quite good except the increase of Colin + Edith’s hours.

Mary Ann Hobbs is ace I'll have you know...

Interesting point about Mills though. The only weak link in the schedule I can see now is Spoony at the weekends. Perhaps he'll take that?

I'm really happy about the new schedule changes, Zane is on earlier has got an extra show a week.

Zane wrote:How happy am I! Thank you all soooo much for showing love and support for what we are doing with the show. But also, most importantly, for taking part. Without you all, this would not be happening. I promise you the new time slot will not change our remit one bit. More time means more music.

Can I also add, big congrats to Annie Mac. We are all so proud and happy for her. Her new show will be amazing.

I'm also really pleased that I will now be able to hear the Lock Up. :D
