funny y'all metion hansel and gretel (sometimes grytel!!!!), just one of the lovely fairy tales drudged up by the brothers grimm (2 of the göttingen 7) as a survey of german dialects in the late 19th century. this was and important study for modern germanic phonetics, which you wouldn't care about...

... but you should. yeah, i hate to agree with sidla, but y is a vowel. problem is (staticfish, i hate the term half vowel but it sorta works), y is also a glide. yeah. which explains the difference in <y> in "why" vs. "junky". blame the english vowel shift of the 14th century.
stuff you should read about vowels.

We should add an extra letter really. Or just replace all y vowels with i.

did you look at that link? [y] and [i] are not the same vowel!

in the history of troublesome vowels though, i-j and u-v are very similar. j is one of the newest letters in the alphabet. before it was just written as an i, though slightly different. back in the day the same thing was done with u and v. you just knew which was which. it sucked when there were words with a wu combo as it would look like this- uuu. ugh. yeah. trivia fact- there's no j street in washington d.c. because it wasn't really considered a letter yet. more about the alphabet
