As I said in a previous post, This weeks number 1 is, The Pixies - "Bam Thwok" which is available exclusively from iTunes. Download charts could potentially contain older songs aswell.

That's why merging them doesn't really make sense if they are measuring different sales.

And the people who say there are already download chart, this is by the official chart company taking into account alot of the main download thingys, which i don't think has been done before.

if they're going to merge them i think there should be rules about older songs

If a new single sells less copies than an older song, all that shows is that the new single is rubbish and doesn't deserve to be number 1 anyways, i agree with Sidla on this one

Its all about image in relation to the charts.
McFly - young audiences - many buyers - £5 pocket money and they have to spend it!
But all credit to them. Not my cup of tea but still catchy.
Not so bad for American acts like Blink 182, amazing song, only got to 23 in the charts but they're not going to stop making music even tho the new song, and there new sound rocks!
Only fink that worries me is bands such as the Hope of the State, released there debut album (The Lost Riots) musically it is immense but it hasnt even got into the top 20 yet but the single got into the charts higher than Jets "r u going to be my girl" Maybe they may feel that noone has bought there stuff they may decide to split. Lets hope not tho
Wow dint mean to write so much

that's why i think there should be rules, so that new talents aren't over shadowed by older songs which have already had their day, and at christmas and new year everyone would be downloading party classics like ymca and the macarena

But surely the charts should reflect what people are buying no matter how old the song is?

Working on the impression that the new download chart is/will be completely seperate to the high-street sales chart...

I think Golden Syrup does have a point as in people would be inclied to download seasonal songs over Christmas or themed songs, for example, during a major sporting event. But then, as McQueen said, the chart should reflect what is currently being purchased regardless of the age of the song.

The album/single chart which is done on album and single sales through convential high-street stores are affected in exactly the same manner by seasonal and themed music, so putting some form of filtering on the chart would give results which we could pretty much assume now and wouldn't infact tell anyone anything useful about what was the current preference of the masses.

A further thought, if they were to filter the chart by age of the song, what stops the filtering expanding to other properties of the song? For example, certain types of music, language within the songs, etc...?

Ok, rant over...

But a chart has to be based on a rule, and normally only one rule. i.e. it's the song that was purchaced the most during the preceding week, or the song that was the most downloaded during the preceded week. To have a chart with two rules such as "most downloaded and produced within the last year" seems pretty silly.

all songs no matter how old should be included, then it would simply show the most popular song downladed that week.
