New RAJAR results out today for 22 March - 20 June show Chris lost 140,000 listeners...

After a difficult few years, Radio 1's audience declined once again to 9.72m, around 10,000 listeners down on the previous quarter. But in a boost for the station's controller, Andy Parfitt, its overall reach grew around 10% to 8.3%.

After an impressive debut performance at the beginning of the year, in which he added 700,000 listeners, Radio 1 breakfast host Chris Moyles lost 140,000 listeners in the second quarter. However, those that stayed listened longer. A spokesman said: "The amount of time people listen to the breakfast show is the highest for three years."

Radio 1 was also pleased with the performance of early evening presenter Zane Low, whose show is aimed at breaking new bands.

The former Xfm DJ's new music show added an extra 200,000 listeners. "It is the biggest new music show in the country and it is a sign that the new music scene is very healthy at the moment," said a station spokesman.

Also, get this - Colin and Edith put on 64,000 listeners to Mark and Lard's old slot. I've gotta say I didn't see that one coming.

They're a bit more mainstream though, as opposed to Mark & Lard who were a bit like Marmite.

Before starting to analyse the listening figures, i would like to know how they are calculated. Personnally i dont believe them to be all that acurate.

Figures go up and down all the time. Moyles is still doing a hell of a lot better than Cox. Nothing to worry about really.

I wouldn't think its down to Johnny V at all. Gaining 700,000 listeners and then losing 140,000 isnt a major worry to the BBC.

Talking of listener figures, this thread has reminded me of an excellent book I've just finished reading called "The Nations favourite" which is all about the ins and outs of Radio one (Including listening figures). It was written in about 1999 so it's a little out of date but still has lots about Chris. It also has all the true stories about Chirs Evans, Mark and Lard etc etc - very interesting reading. It was written by a guy called Simon Garfield who is a journalist. They let him spend a year interviewing all the staff.

Has anyone else read this book? If not, I suggest you do. It's only £4.79 on Amazon!

I have been meaning to get this book for ages. I still personally thought at around about 1999 the station was sounding the best it has been for me anyway, so I should give it a read really...

Moyles has spoken about this on the air before. Apparently Simon Garfield hates Moyles.

And when it was announced that Moyles was moving to breakfast, Matthew Banisters show on Five Live had Garfield on slating Moyles... Moyles said it was a really wierd interview because Garfield was slating him where as Bannister was effectively the person that brought Moyles to radio 1 before being replaced by Parfitt.

could the listener drop be anything to do with the fact that a lot of people will have tuned in at first to see what Moyles was like on breakfast... but after a period they would have got bored and changed station?

I imaging they use stratified sampling or something similar. I.e. attempt to take a cross section of the population. Its effectiveness and accuracy is questionable of course, and the integrity of the results abvoiusly sepends largely on the method and way it is collected.

I'vre read it too, and really enjoyed it. It'd be great if someone did a similar book covering the latest period of change at Radio 1 - that'd make good reading.

Yeah, that's what I'd put it down too. Breakfast shows generally seem to fall in their second quarter.
